Hi All,
I'm scheduled to visit the Ultima factory in early June, and want to hear from others what problems have occured when importing into NA, specifically Canada. Any special shipping, packaging, payment problems to ask Ted about? Any suggestions about how to get the parts into Canada legally?

I don't know the whole story but I heard the last guy that tried to legally import one into Canada couldn't get it into the country. Last I heard customs sent it back to the factory and the guy is trying to sell it.

Is this "THE" Big Al?

The C5 forum (that goes by another name) - Big Al?

I think I posted a pic of the GTR when it first came out on "that" C5 forum (you know the one - I think - if this is truly "U").

Is that picturing the thing that turned you on to the car, or was it something else? I know up until I posted a pic of the car, no one had seen it on "that" forum. If they did, know one had posted a Pic prior to mine. Hmmm.

When I posted the pic originally, everyone raved. But, there were a few who thought it looked too much like a "Kit Car". I laughed, and reminded them that it was a "Kit Car". I then posted some older performance numbers. This is when Ultima actively displayed the use of an LS1 V8 mated to a Porsche G50 as the powerplant of choice.

One of the things that turned me on to the car was the Manufacturers endorsement of the LS1 powerplant. Fast forward to now, and they seem to have taken that endorsement down from their "official" site. I looked at the power to weight ratio of the GTR given the LS1 V8 and immediately knew what my C5 was getting. It started me to thinking real hard.

How are the others (NastyC5, RAT, Vetterdstr, and the rest of the gang) doing these days? I have not been on that forum for at least 2 years, now. Been too busy with building airplanes and other "speed" projects, etc.

Search on here for 'Canada'.
There have been a few other posts on the subject.

I think the answer may have been not to buy it all at once (cheaper on shiping). Buy it as 'car parts' but don't buy in one shipment enough to build to a specific stage like rolling chassis.
Body and chassis would make a nice box full.

L2Pilot - nope, it wasn't me from the C5 forum. I first saw a Sports at Knotts Berry Farm in 1995(?) - it was Randy Bares, one week after it ran at Run and Gun, about a month before it crashed at Virgina City. The sound of that engine was amazing! I've been chasing the dream of an Ultima ever since.
I know about the one that was refused entry into Canada, but hope to hear other input about the details and problems encountered when bringing one into Canada. I have talked to the Transport Canada person who decides what can enter, and have some idea of "acceptable", but no hard/definite rule for what is allowed.

Fair enough Al, on the corvetteforum.com membership. I have not been there in almost 2 years, so my memory may have been a little rusty. I was one of the original members with the callsign “BlueJet”, as my C5 was Nassau Blue. Your callsign “BigAl” looked very similar, so that is why I asked.

Did not know that there would be any issues for you with getting one into Canada - hmmm. Seems like shipping in "parts" may indeed make some sense as suggested. They cannot claim that it is a “car” if it is not truly a “car” - if you know what I mean. I hope that this will not be a problem for the U.S. and California.

Al, (if you really want the entire car shipped at one time – which is what I must have, personally) have you thought about shipping it somewhere south of the Canadian border and then “Interlining” (inside a Truck) the box back above the Canadian/US line? Not sure if this would work, but at least you will not be dealing with Canadian Port Authorities (assuming that the problem is at the Port level). Just a thought, however.

You are correct about this being an awesome car. The more I study this car, the more I get convinced that this project should be inside my garage.

Here's to good shipping and no Port Authority issues for you!
