To wing or not to wing ...

Hi folks,

My GTR is off to Ultima tomorrow for checks & SVA. It's all done bar a few niggles (that Andy and the guys will no doubt sort pretty quickly - fingers crossed !). I've already had a quick run up our (quiet) lane and nothing fell off Seriously, all went well, awesome stuff ! Driving back into the garage caused me a few problems; I found it difficult to judge the width of the GTR being so low down. I guess it comes with experience ?

Anyway, I have yet to fit the wing (Ultima said best to wait until post SVA). In the meantime, I have had many an hour to look at the car from all sides and ponder (or drool over) its curves. I personally think that the car is slightly better looking without the wing. How many of you out there don't have the wing ? Does it materially affect the driving experience ? Richard at Ultima says that you can certainly tell the difference, especially braking from high speed. I assume is it still stable at high speed without it ? I also read the thread where someone mentioned "no wing for V-max".

you don't 'need' a wing... I drove my canam at over 180 mph without one, You definatelly feel the car needs it if you are braking hard from 180+mph but the car wasn't unsafe without it and lets be hounest how often are you going to go that fast on the road.

If you really want one I know of a brand new unfitted Ultima wing for sale for about £1300.

Yes, I don't think 180mph will be a daily option (although the A5 between Telford and Shrewsbury has 4 miles or so of straight dual carriageway ).

Thanks also for the offer although I have already bought a wing from Ultima - this is going back tomorrow for a refund.

I prefere the ca without the wing hence I do not have one, I have had mixed answers over handling, I cant help thinking that it needs it for above 130mph.

Hi Andrew,

I've had one or two phone calls that say the same, but it seems that this is just when you are giving it serious grief around a track. I know my limitations, or at least I hope I don't find them on the road, and I agree it is a better looking car without the wing.

That said, the wing does look great on some cars - Wayne's in particular would look naked without it !

I don't have a wing. I too prefer the look without. I also have a nice unobstructed view in my rear view mirrors!

im really suprised by the all the posts saying how they prefer the look with out the wing!!

it may not need the wing for driving but i think they both really need it to look right and think the ones with out look naf in comparison
that said i would still give various organ to have one even with out its wing

Arh, but how long is the circuit, "Road America" sound like it is very long
