Ignition Question

Hi All.

My SBC is without a distributor (or any other ignition parts....).

I am thumbing the Summit catalogue and looking at an HEI (Petronix Flame Thrower) or a Mallory Unilite.

What would be the easiest to fit into my Ultima? (wiring wise) or does anyone have a better suggestion ?

I prefer the HEI over the Mallory Unilite, had some problems in the past with the unilite sensors going bad. Every autoparts store in the States stocks HEI parts.

Not seen you on here before. If its your first then welcome.
Most of the SBC's I have seen use the complete MSD setup. I have all the info at home but am away at the moment.
From memory
Dist. MSD billet pro street. + leads
Ignition controller MSD AL6 which comes with soft rev limiting. you just plug in the module for the RPM you want.
Coil MSD blaster II. get the chrome one its slightly more expensive but the red one (made in mexico)is prone to failure.

You can run an MSD box with an HEI. The HEI has the coil integral in the cap, simpler installation. HEI's came standard on 1974 and up Gen 1 SBC, slightly newer than stone age.
Of course if you had an LS engine you wouldn't need a distributor or MSD at all.

Many Thanks for replies. I think maybe I gor for HEI for moment, I am planning a full Motec ignition/injection system for next year(ish)so as long as an HEI just gets me going then I am happy with that (plus money saved brings on Motec faster!) An old mallory mechanical duel point used to be on the engine and got a binned by the old man during a garage clear out (doh!) So this will be my first HEI...

Thanks for welcome Steve, I do skulk around at the back of the forums picking up hints and tips but I generally find myself at the shallow end of some of the threads so don't post much..

Where's the best place to get HEI dizzies from?, realsteel dont show them in their catalogue.
