Well, after what I can only describe as a disappointing and at times a really crap year, I'm taking the Can-Am off the road to 'fix' a few things.
My first priority is the gearbox, I've lost 4th gear synchro on the Getrag G96. Not too many specialist interested in fixing this box, I have had stupid quotes to strip it down only, with no guarantee that it could repaired anyway. Apparently this is not uncommon according to the people I've spoken to, it's either 4th or 2nd that goes.
You can guess what I think of this box vomitsperm
I'm on the look out for a GT2 or a box that can take cable change.
Whist the box is out the engine may as well come out and get checked out, it has been leaking a bit over the last few months, then I can clean up the engine bay.
A big problem, for me anyway, is the heat generated in the cockpit and I will be looking at ways to try to keep cool, I have retro fitted air/con which has gone some way to cool things down, but I am still getting hot air coming out of from the passenger luggage cover and heat wash from the rear clip. I'm also looking into trying to get some sort of air circulation in the seats (light weight I know) but it's a bit embarrassing getting out of the car with a sweaty back and where the belts were.
I'm also looking at body work mods, extra ducts in the rear clip to aid cooling and a targa top (dare I say it ala L tus Elise style)
I think that’s about it, but I'm sure I'll think of something else as I get going.

Hi Graham

Did you not get anywhere with the factory with regards any warranty? The GT2 box will be a big expense as it's a G50. New adapter, flywheel, clutch and starter. I hope mine holds together for now! I may also look into changing mine for something better. I've got plenty on the list for this winter also. My good news is that the engine is now running fine on the new 65lb injectors. It just took a bit more fine tuning to get things right. I'm holding back on the next dyno session until I have changed the supercharger pulley for the next size down(more boost).

1. First is to reach my target bhp. I've got two new supercharger pulleys on the way from the US of A. One to give me 1 bar and the other 1.2 bar boost.

2. I'm also fitting water/methanol injection.

3. I'm also going to finish fitting the traction control system.

4. I'm working on the hardtop this weekend and hope to have that finished for the spring.

That's the plan anyway! Lots of smaller jobs to do aswell. Wiper, washer, oil cooler and cold air to cockpit etc etc.

Regards Dave

PS I'll call for a chat Graham.

Hi Graham,

Sorry to hear about the gearbox - how many miles have you done on it ? Have you tried these guys ? - http://www.parr-uk.co.uk/ . CMS recommend them. They quoted me about £800 to fit a final drive.

Here is what CMS quoted me when discussing a rebuild (note the steel replacement synchro) :

Dear Andrew,

Here's the pricing schedule to both install a new final drive as well as perform the basic overhaul:

-labor $950 (teardown, clean, inspect, setup final drive, re-assemble)

-2nd gear idler $336.77 (bad dog teeth more often than not)

-1st/2nd slider assembly $400.91 (bad teeth on 2nd gear side more often than not)

-1st and 2nd brass synchro assemblies $536.70 (upgrade to steel 2nd $1482.66)

-3rd-6th brass synchro rings $401.08 (upgrade to steel $385)

-gasket, seals, hardware $102.12

-main thrust bearings for pinion shaft, input shaft $625.45

-differential thrust bearings $152.71

-subtotal $3505.74

We also offer billet shift forks for 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th @ $600.

Most all of the 996 boxes that are sent to us for rebuilding require these parts minimally and it's likely that your box will need some attention. If we were to install a new final drive set only, the estimated cost would be $1677.57 not including the cost of the final drive.

The gaskets, seals and main bearings for input and pinion shafts automatically have to be replaced as those parts get ruined during disassembly.

For trackuse we highly recommend the use steel synchros for the gears you most often use and billet shift forks.
