I'm in the middle of sorting out a problem with the clutch release fork pivot on my Sports and with the gearbox off, I took the opportunity of replacing the clutch release bearing which was showing some wear.

The replacement bearing looked identical to the old one but I subsequently discovered (God bless Andy at Ultima) that Porsche, in their wisdom, have made the the latest bearing 1mm smaller in diameter than the old one. This means that when you come to refit the gearbox, the collar at the back end of the first motion shaft, won't fit inside the release bearing as it's 1mm too big. The problem shows all the symptoms of the clutch being misaligned and I spent hours aligning and realigning the friction plate all to no avail. A call to Andy on another matter finally gave me the clue as to what the problem could be and sure enough, 30 seconds with a vernier gauge revealed the 1mm discrepancy.

The moral of the story is, if you have a G50 type gearbox with the original clutch release bearing (part number 3151 173 101) and you replace it with 3151 173 202, then make sure that you change the collar as well or you'll never get your gearbox back on.

For the record, what I've referred to above as the "Collar" is, I understand, officially called the "Guide Tube". I picked up the replacement "Guide Tube" yesterday and the gearbox is now back on the car.

Guy. I wish that I had seen this site 2 days ago. It would have saved me hours of aggravation and bad language.

Alternatively you can fit the gearbox with brute force. Then start the engine and rip the input shaft sleeve off and crack the gearbox casting, and fill your garage floor with 3.5 litres of gorgeous smelling transmission oil. Alledgedly
