I am reinstalling the distributor in my engine and never mind how many different ways I try, it willnot locate fully down leaving a 6mm gap.

Any ideas??

Thanks,

Sounds to me like it’s not locating into the oil pump drive, take it out and turn the rotor arm back a bit and try again

Hopefully you know exactly where you want the rotor arm to be when the dizzy is in and are rotating it back a bit so that it spirals down into position.

What is happening is that as it arrives at the bottom the shaft is failing to align with the blade on the oil pump.

Put a screwdriver down the hole and turn the pump drive a little and try again with the dizzy. A bit of trial and error may be required unless you can work out from looking at the end of the dizzy shaft where the pump drive needs to be.

Martin: My first thought was to say something smart ass about if you had an LS you wouldn't need no stinking distributor. But on reflection I remember a few (to many) hours spent trying to get the dizzy right, (as you folks on the right side of the pond and wrong side of the road call it) The ideas about the pump sound like the best first idea of whats wrong. Good Luck Lee

This can be a pain in the ar5e, as you lower the distributor when the drive meets the cam it starts to turn. You need to judge how much it turns so that the oil pump drive just slots in. I don't have a distributor, just an MSD distributor plug so the position does not matter but even that can be a really pain to get fully home. I have the added complication of sealing the mating edge on the intake manifold with silicon just to stop any oil leaking out so time is limited when doing it too.

You can look down where the shaft for the oil drive is and turn it to match the slot on the distributor or if you know where you want the rotor you can just set it in and crank the motor and it will drop in place --- remeber the rotor will be about 1/8 of a turn advance to the point it was went you set it in.
