Layout of dash and key dimensions
Discussion
Hey guys.....sitting here overseas planning my dash layout around the Stack display and really need to know a few key dimensions.......I'm gonna 3D model some billet ali housings.......plan if possible is to locate centre housing for SatNav and aircon controls, billet steering column housing for indicator/washer stalks/hazard and sequential shift lights, drivers side housing for misc switches etc......what I really need to know to get started is the following...
a)Vertical depth of the dashboard.....looks to be somewhere around 160-180mm??
b)Clearance required at bottom lip of dashboard for chassis tube....I'm assuming the 'lip' often referred to during centre section install is a close fit? Allow 40mm?
c)Width of the flat face of the dashboard....i.e. excluding the curved returns either side
d)Distance of steering column hole from centreline of the dashboard....
Many thanks, Simon

Hi Simon
The vertical depth (height) of the dash in the GTR is 120mm excluding the beveled edges, however, part of the chassis runs along the bottom of the dash restricting mounting depth for such things as sat-nav, touchscreens, etc. I spoke to Dave at the factory yesterday who says the top section of the dash can be raised 20-40mm by cutting along the top lip of the dash & around both sides towards the windscreen, leaving just 400mm or so attached near the front. The top section of the dash will then be hinged and can be raised and the gap filled with P40. I believe this is how the can-am's dash was originally developed (it is different the the GTR - curved & taller). I hope this makes sense!
I would be very interested in some billet mountings/controls - please keep me posted.
Cheers

Hi Darren...
Thanks for the info...gonna give the guys at the factory a call to discuss a bit further today....120mm is slightly smaller than I had assumed but then I had based it on Pete's SatNav install being double din standard......plenty of ways around that though given the plan to make face mounted billet control panels......I can extend these above the top of dash....may even incorporate the stack pod into one larger dash top...if that makes sense
...
Certainly keep you posted on the parts as I develop them.....I have in-house ability to do batch runs as an when there is any interest..........currently in production is the complete gear linkage assembly, handbrake, pedal sets and numerous titanium fittings....these are simpler reproduction parts with minimal engineering/modelling effort.....just want to make them just a bit sexier and in keeping with a 60k+ plus car
...for the interior items want to achieve a simple 'production' feel set-up using combination billet panels/switchgear with carbon inlays etc......set-up will however be based around Stack Display and double din SatNav......for me LuckyP's and 454's interior sets the standard....
How's your build coming along? Have you sourced or received your LS7 yet??? Be interested to follow your build and swap ideas as we go.....

Hi Simon
I'm almost at the rolling chassis stage, just brakes & wheels to go. I got a great deal on the engine from Mike Johnson (Boosted LS1) of Boost Performance, it's a 625-650HP LS7 complete with everything that AS supply and should be arriving next month. I believe Mike is planning to enter the LS7 Ultima market and as such I'm the guineapig!
I spent a good few hours talking with Mike and looking around his workshop (Aladdin's cave!) and would recommend you give him a call (07973 341532) - he really knows his stuff!
I'm having SAT-NAV in the centre of the dash & because of limited depth (air-con is in the way) have opted for a 7" touchscreen in the dash with a car-computer mounted behind the seat. The touchscreen is just over an inch deep so depth isn't an issue, but height is - hence raising the dash! The computer will run a stripped down version of Windows XP (Tiny XP or Bullet XP) which boots very fast, plus a Centrafuse frontend for the SAT-NAV, etc.
I'm keen to see your dash ideas prior to me butchering mine! Also keen to see the other parts your producing.
All the best and good luck with the build
Darren
PS: Perhaps I should have called myself LS7COLA???

Darren,
I'm hoping to get to the rolling chassis stage within the next 2 months - depending on the work situation - I'm hoping to get a solid 4 weeks in very shortly...engine wise I've gone with the last forged piston LS7 from Jeff Schwartz will delivery around end Feb with minimum 650hp....still thinking about an inlet mod Jeff's talking about! Good to know there's a good LS7 alternative here in the UK though...
Yup Davrianmans dash is shaping up real well....very interested in the touchscreen/computer set-up you've gone with......had started to look at these but haven't made any calls yet as to the various options.....can you point me in the right direction on this??.....this set-up is gonna be the only luxury in the car as I'm trying to keep weight down for the track but like lots of the guys on here guess European trips are high on the agenda......
I'll keep you posted on the ideas for the dash as I work through the various options....
As for the LS7COLA handle......assume that means black and that you're not painting the car a nice shade of brown

Hi Simon
Your engine sounds very tasty - what's the inlet manifold mod you're thinking about?
I went with this PC:
http://linitx.com/viewproduct.php?prodid=11827
...and this screen coz it's the shortest 7" I could find (the EBY701 is only 115mm tall)
http://www.carcomputer.co.uk/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=115
I'm still researching the tv/radio module, GPS receiver, rear camera & OBD! Good job it's a light-weight car to start with coz it may not be when I've finished!
These sites are useful:

Brown would be a nice colour???
Maybe LS7Guinness would be more appropriate but I guess I'd have to put a white stripe on the top!!!

Hi Darren...
Sorry didn't respond earlier.....just catching up today....thanks for the links on the in-car PC stuff.....looks like one way to go......I'm also thinking of just going with a portable SatNav/MP3 centred housed in a billet facia.....really want to keep the weight down as far as possible.....
Engine wise I managed to secure the last forged piston LS7 from Jeff.....I've gone with his 650hp set-up but there's a new inlet manifold in the pipeline that I believe Jeff mentioned gets the engine upto around the 700hp mark ......probably going to stick with the 650 though....Jeff you out there? Any news on this mod??

So a question, could you use this as a BCM ? how many I/O could you control ?? have bean toying with the Idea, as almost all new cars now use BCM's....
