Some useful transaxle information from the states
Discussion
Hi everyone,
Erik here from Carquip, also in Colorado, USA. I have been reading this post with quite a bit of interest. I thought that I might have a couple of things here to speak about. I am not sure if they will be of interest or not.
All of the owners of G-BOX previously worked for a company called PowerHaus, as did Roger Brown, of California Motorsports. I, for a time was the General Manager of this company. I now work for Carquip, which is owned by Tom Conway, who some of you may know.
The 996 or G96 gearbox is not at all a throw away gearbox. It is very tough however to find someone that knows what need to be done in order to rebuild these correctly. It requires the use of a 45 ton press, as well as some knowledge of the in's and outs. Be careful who you allow to work on this gearbox, they could end up doing more damage then good.
There are several good options for you all if you are not wishing to go this direction. The G50 5-speed is a great option. Particularly the G50/50 and close behind the G50/52. These are the ideal transaxles for high horsepower cars, although they are very hard to find. I do currently have 1 G50/50 in stock that will be Cryogenically treated and REM superpolished on all of the interior gears and slider assy. Due to the nature of this gearbox it is currently being offered for sale at the price of $15,000 USD. Plus shipping.
A very good alternative would be to go with a cryogenically treated and REM finished G50 5-speed, such as a G50/01 or G50/03. These are a bit less to purchase and for most will work just fine. Keep in mind that with weight of your Ultima cars being so low that what you are fighting most here is not the strength of the gearbox but the limit of your traction. These Gearboxes have done VERY well here in the state, are quite a bit easier to locate and build and are quite a bit less expensive. The stock ratio's are quite good as is, but can certainly be modified to suit your needs, should you wish them to be taller.
There are a only a couple of companies here in the states that I feel comfortable recommending for these types of applications, as they are quite unique and require a special attention to detail during construction. While I tend to be somewhat biased toward Carquip, as you might imagine, I feel that in order to do justice to everyone, Renegade Hybrids, G-box, and CMS are all good companies with experienced personel.
I would love the opportunity to earn your business. We are extremely good at what we do. We offer a 12 month / 12K mile warrantee on our units, and I guarantee that it will be done right the first time. I absolutely have one of the best techs in the country working for me. I noticed that some of the posts here have referenced the Mosler cars. My tech is the man that is responsible for at least some of the transaxle builds for the Mosler units.
If any of you would like to speak to me in about suggestions for your projects, or to purchase a transaxle or for anything. I would love to hear from you. I hope that you all do not mind me posting this. I have found that the Ultima cars, the Factory Five GTM's, and the Mosler Autos are some of the finest cars on the planet and I love being a part of their building.
Warmest Regards to all and I hope to hear from you soon.
