Wow two posts in one day.

Can anyone put their finger straight on these probs and save me some time?

Came to start the engine today (first time) and found that
1) i could turn the engine over without the key in the ignition and that,
2) the engine would carry on turning over once i had let go of the start button. The start button thing didnt happen all the time, sometimes it stoppped turning when i let go of the button.

Don't have the circuit to hand so may be a bit off here.
1. If the engine turns over without the ignition on then you are powering the button direct from the battery probably with a brown wire rather than a green wire which is ignition switched.

2. If it is staying on then:-
A. The switch is sticking on.
B. The relay is sticking on.
C. The starter solenoid is sticking.
If you don't have a relay in circuit then the switch contacts will likely burn and stick. The soleniod may stick simply because it has been sat for a while and the problem may go away.

A note on point 1), i believe and TuxMan will be able to verify that the starter button is actually powered all the time, ie no key is needed. This is how the loom/switches are wired with an Ultima supplied loom. However, the engine will not start because the ignition side (ie coils will be feed by the ignition switch). I made my own loom and the starter is chained off the ignition switch as you and I may think would be safe and logical.

So how does TuxMan know this? Well to cut a long storey short... while up side down under the dash he hit the starter button while pulling himself out only to find the car jump forward and do £2500+ worth of damage just before his SVA (you may have seen his 'spare' front clip for sale on PH)!

If I remember right my old GTR would turn over with out the ignition on, useing the starter button. I Always ment to change it but never got round to it... standard wiring loom....

I would say your wiring is correct and the starter button sticking, mine also turns over without the key in the ignition

Yup - mine did that too (starter would work with no key).

However, I rewired the ignition so that this couldn't happen (to avoid potential accidents as per above post!)

I'm hoping the starter run on is just because my starter motor has been sat for two years, i will take my rubber mallet to it tomorrow, im grinning all ready and i've only the done the switchon/switchoff thing so far,

That sounds like a really poor design in the factory loom... Wired my switch up last week, but I will now change it to be ignition fed instead.. Do you know which wire needs to be changed? My switch has two large white/red cables on one side and a small brown cable on the other...

I don't have this problem because my car starts with the key. This means I'm up and gone while the rest of you are searching for your starter buttons!

Which switch are you referring too?
If you mean start button then the brown is unswitched live. One white/red goes to the starter relay and the other comes from the ignition switch should you decide to start on the key.
Replace the brown with a green which is ignition switched.
