It runs great. Now all I have to do is install the side mirrors, 1/2 shafts and rear tires and go for a ride. Check out the pics of the motor with my custom made covers on.

Looks great, however I think your coolant expansion tank may be too low?? Shouldn't it be level with the coolant swirl pot?

Humm. Interesting. I don't know why it would matter at what level the water expands into. Once the pressure relief valve opens, it flows into the expansion tank and returns via vacuum into the system once it is cooled. It is higher than the radiator which is where the expanded water will return.

Awesome mate. Expansion tank looks OK to me. It's at the top of the recessed section of the bulkhead right? Then that's as high as it goes, no?

ETA. Doh!! Scrap my comment. Got the swirl and expansion mixed up.

Paul the covers look great. I screwed up and connected the bleed line from the heads to the line between the resevior tank and the over flow WRONG. the bleed line connects between the radiator and the resevior. Otherwise the heads bleed through the overflow tank overboard after a while you are low on water and never saw a leak. Another screwup, I used a K/N filer thats bigger than the one you have (more area) when I ran at El Toro when I got done the file had collaspsed. After seeing Builders post about proper size for filtes I think the filter is to small and that lead to its collapse.ould be wrong. Hope your eye is getting better. By he way I don't see your head bleed line in the picture so you probably already have it in the right place. Lee

Looks great! Be sure to get some video of your first ride. I am not too far behind now. Still have lots of work to do, though.

Again, we had another foot of snow Sunday and the power was out most of the day. Spent the weekend using the snow-blower on my driveway (and neighbor's drives) and keeping the generator running for the house.

It's amazing how much snow we've had in the last few weeks. It's snowed almost every day. Picture below...

I thought the filler cap on the coolant tank had to be the highest point on the cooling system. Otherwise, when you open it up, don't you loose coolant?

Those covers look fantastic.

Ha-ha... Yup. The boat, other (running) Impala, '55 Chevy, Ultima project, car lift, some woodworking projects, and a bunch of other goodies are in the shop.

You guys are good. I took the cap off the lower tank tonight and it was full of water. Thats not good. How can it act as an expansion tank if it is already full. I guess I got bad advice on its mounting location. I'll have to make another bracket to raise it. Hopefully, mounted higher, gravity will help it serve its intended purpose.

Does the swirl pot have the dummy cap on ?? I had my expansion tank lower than the swirl tank by over a 12" and never had a problem. Must make sure you have no leaks or the vacuum effect wont pull back the fluid if you have, and always let it cool down before removing any of the caps or it will just suck the air back to the Swirl pot and you will never get the water back.... If you can get the expansion tank higher than the swirl it wont be a problem, but remember you have to get the swirl pot higher than the engine other wise that will be an issue... packaging is always a bitch....

GTRClive-Great advice. I wonder if I installed a one way valve (like the one supplied by Ultima for the fuel system) near the radiator end of this overflow system, if that would then prevent water from flowing back into the tank without the pressure relief. That way the only way water would get into the lower tank would be to have >13lbs of pressure at the uppermost tank with the pressure relief valve. Then when it cools, the one way valve would allow the system to naturally suck it all (or most of it) back into the main system. Does this sound like it makes sense?
Thanks,
Paul

Definately have the expansion & swirl pots level!

I installed a C&R racing oil to water cooler by mounting it vertically under the swirl pot, this required me to shift the pot up to very close to the anchor point for the left hand rollcage brace.

However the expansion pot just filled up and bled coolant until I moved it up as well.

Hi Paul,

Nice work. Looks fantastic :-) Did you make your own headers up or did you purchase? Nice Job!

Mart,
Got the LS7 & headers from Jeff Schwartz. I had the remainder of the exhaust custom made locally. Jeff now has a great exhaust that looks really good.
