Hi all

I was just wondering how and if it is possible to lighten the flywheel on my Ult

I have a SBC with a Getrag and to be honest the flywheel is a monster, if it possible to lighten it where should i remove metal from?? I have gone with a 377cuin engine because it revs nice and quick/high but this monster flywheel is not going to help.

Thanks your views would be much appreciated!!

Hi Kyle

When I have it on the lathe on Thursday I'll just be careful not to sneeze or it could end up a lot lighter! laugh

Regards Dave

when i had my engine rebuilt Tom (engine builder) did quite a bit on the flywheel including lightning and balancing ...said it was a bit out so might be worth getting it checked .

I recently had my flywheel rebalanced and in the process a reasonable amount of weight was removed.

The balancing has totally cured my vibration issue and the engine is now really smooth - as an added bonus due to the weight removal the engine is now much faster revving and responsive too.

The flip side of a light flywheel is that it takes more skill to drive smoothly, especially in the lower gears and pulling away as it's very easy to jump from say 2000 - 5000rpm in a split second if you happen to cough / fart / sneeze mid pullaway smile

On the whole I love the way the car responds now and would highly recommend a lighter flywheel to others.

The one thing I would say is that you should be careful you don't push it too far and go too light as a huge engine plus light car could lead to much Kangarooing and wheelspin in the first couple of gears if you eat too many beans biggrin

I had a 964 Porsche some years ago.. The first thing I did is fit a lightweight flywheel + headers. It took some getting used to in traffic, there wasnt a single person that didnt stall it when they first tried to drive it, it needed >2200 to get moving without stalling..... but it revved like a motorbike. That car was so much fun.... the lightweight flywheel completely transformed the car. Lucky - have you done that on yours yet?

Lightened flywheels are the least of my problems at the moment! Engines blown a hole in the side. Might take the oportunity to do this though when I get a new one.

What's this then?
When did this happen?
Is this another stage in the Lucky_p saga?
