Chassis dolly idea - what do you think ?

I am using the traditional dolly that most people (?) seem to use, but....
...do you think that two of these could be slightly modified to attach the chassis (one at each end) so that it could be rotated easily ?

Probably a ridiculous idea - but I just thought I would throw it out there and see what people think !

I have one of these in my garage. I don't think it would be man enough to support 500Kg of Ultima to be honest... Also the rear wheels are fixed, so you would not be able to move it sideways... Have you looked at the small wheel dollys that fit on each wheel? I have seen some guys at race meets with them and they work very well...

If you brace the base correctly I would assume that it would be able to hold more than they specify and still be safe. You are now supporting the load from two ends and removing some of the bending moment in the stand.
Still would not want to work from underneath it.
If it does get heavy just add a support from/to the roof
Ultima = 990
- engine = 150kg
- gearbox = 40kg
- wheels = 40kg
Total 760kg
Its getting close to the rated capacity.
Would be enough to get panelling, plumbing and wiring done.

Just had a look at my engine stand which is 780mm. This is not high enough to rotate an Ultima.

No, to be honest, I had done nothing more than see the engine stand and let my mind wander a bit !! I guess it is a non-starter....Just had a look at my engine stand which is 780mm. This is not high enough to rotate an Ultima.

Hi, the upright on the engine stand leans backwards I guess for balance purposes - this means the facing plane is at an angle rather than the required vertical. I think it would be impossible to make a spit without chopping off the upright, setting it to 90 degrees and bracing it.

Also remember that there is only one time when you need it upside down and that is the underskin.
I turned mine over on my own.
I put a long bolt through the gearbox mount hole in the back of the chassis and hoisted it up off the dolly from the garage roof.
I picked up the front end by hand and walked it to the left and placed it on a trestle.
Moved the dolly and placed another trestle beside the first.
Then rolled the chassis so it was upside down on the second trestle.
Moved the first trestle to the back and lowered the chassis onto it.

Somewhere in the world, you can get a thing like an L-shaped pair of beams. They connect to the stub axles, and run under the car, resting on the floor. On one side of the car, the beams project out from under the car, and turn gently through 90 degrees in a curve, so that they point upwards.
It is then possible to lift the beams on the other side of the car, rotating the whole car along it's longitudinal axis, leaving the car resting on the beams that were once vertical.
