diesel power plants?
Discussion
Well, that is the question. Why not? It's not a matter of needing low revs or fuel economy, it is just another avenue of power. Maybe there are many more cons than pros, which is why I asked the question. It's pure curiosity. I see a lot of great diesel power plants coming out in the new generations of high performance vehicles, which trigged the idea.
Sound? Well although I'm sure the sound would change, I'd be more interested in the performance. Could you get astounding performance from a turbo diesel in an Ultima? With all that torque, it would have to account for something...

The diesel engine would be incredible heavy and this would not be good news. Yes the torque would be helpful but if you wanted massive amounts of torque and power what is wrong with a mercedes benz twin turbo v12 from the s600? That should potter along quite nicely.
I do not think that a diesel Ultima would offer the correct driving experience.

Audi has been running diesel engines at Le Mans for the past few years and they have been dominating the race. A contributing factor is they can run more laps before needing to refuel. Peugeot is introducing a diesel and they are faster than Audi in testing.
The new 4.2L diesel in the Audi A8 weighs 562 lbs, which is slightly heavier than a dry LS7 (468 lbs), but you gain tremendous torque.
Many have a perception of a diesel being smelly, noisy and slow. Audi is running quiet, clean and very fast, not to mention very fuel efficient. Although diesel fuel costs a bit more, the fuel efficiency more than makes up for it.
Now just because diesel engines are dominating Le Mans, that doesn't mean it is a good fit for an Ultima. But the possibilities are there. I guess we'd never know until someone with some creative thinking gave it a go.

I kind of get where you're coming from but performance diesel just doesn't have the right ring to it...
There's not much more disappointing at Le Mans that one of those diesel thingies going past because you can't hear the engine, the heart of the car!
Diesel just doesn't seem to have character, it's soul-less. I don't think you're ever going to get people reminiscing about the day they stood and listened to the new Peugeot TDI race car in the same way they'll talk about a BRM 16 or any well tuned V8.

It strikes me as very Clarksonesque when folk say they can't understand the interest in making a performance diesel [kit or not]car. Come on peeps, it's just another internal combustion engine, and as shown by Audi, may be the future for more of us. I seriously considered a V10 tuareg engine when I starting my build, but chickened out due to lack of technical expertise. I wish someone would do it to prove the alternative [and individualist] sense in the idea.
Remember that the Audi engine that is used is a race engine, designed for racing. Therefore lighter parts and more exotic parts would be used. This would mean a catastrophic price tag for your motor. If you had to compare the weight of motors then compare apples with apples, so a le mans spec v8, the Bentley's v8 against the Audi. That would be a fair comparison.
take it none of you guys read PPC then??? there is a guys building a westfield using a VAG 1.9TDI motor. should be pretty impresive once he finishes.
like the idea of the BMW unit. the only problem is is there are no reasonably priced standalone ECO's out there!
and if you want a V8 diesel than how about this one

here is banks racing engine to

oh yeah and thats a 4 valve per cylinder motor!
Chris.

chuntington101 That is a marine engine.
no its not it a automotive engine they are addapting for marrine aplications.the bottom link shows what Banks power are doing in their race car. also if you have a click around the site you will see they are building a 1000bhp dragster using the same plant (and a little bit of N2O).
having said that i looked around and i think the engine is about 28 inch long and 20 odd inch wide. could it even fit into and ultima chassis???
