hi all

can anyone tell me where you get the 'helicoptor' opening vents for the windows please & how much they are.
also has anyone come up with a better window 'ventilaion' idea yet ? iam trying to come up with a better solution ( i need a bigger opening to flick my fag out,lol )

Billy, it may well be worth considering kicking that filthy habbit at long last, the benifits will be ten fold.
Remember, this car has a fibreglass body shell and as a result is highly flamable.
The cockpit is not large and unless you can do something spectacular with the side screens/vent arrangement, you will more than likely pass out mid drag due to lack of oxygen.
I have never heard of an 'economical to run' Ultima and kicking the habbit will leave you more cash to buy fuel for sure.
There are a myriad of side issues also like; Fag ash all over the place, nicotine tarnishing the interior, the vile stench of stale tobacco etc.
I was going to say that you could well live a little longer as a result of abstaining from setting fire to death sticks and inserting them between your lips but getting yourself an Ultima COULD negate this positive, so forget that one.

Anyway, on a more serious note, although I do not smoke, ( which I would think you may have guessed by now ), I do like plenty of ventilation and due to my impatience and the fact that I managed to miss lay the side screens after I had the car painted, the GTW is side screen less and is nothing like as unbearable without them as you might think. I now have a new pair of screens and intend to make them removable so I can drive without them for the majority of the time. I know that this may create problems with regards to security but as I have said before, I do not intend to leave the car anywhere un-maned and the windows can be re installed if necessary taking just a few minutes. With regards to the weather, I will not be going out in the rain intentionally but if I get caught, and it has happened once already, it is not the end of the world to quickly fit the screens.
Remember, every trip out in this car will be an EVENT and any abnormal concessions that need to be made will become part and parcel of said EVENT.

thanks for input so far, and wayne i promise never to mention weed again mate,lol.

I was trying to come up with a 'design' for the side windows so they actually open in some way.Its just a shame that a propar opening window wasnt designed in the car in first place.

What idea have you come up with so far ? the biggest problem i can see so far is how to make something that looks designed & not diy (iam a designer so bad design & finish really bugs me). When i actually get hold of some side windows, i will be able to move forward a bit hopefully.

Hi Billy, may I suggest something around the Ford GT40 theme, for an opening of the side windows, or isn't that what you had in mind ?

This subject, as have the majority of subjects on here over time, has been covered before.
The general consensus seems to be that the GT40 type opening is not really a preferred option and therefor the only way to achieve the objective is to make a frame within a frame as the material used for the side-screens is particularly flimsy and is not really suitable to hinge unframed. Crafty came up with some good ideas on that front but so far to my knowledge, there is nothing that has yet been made widely available to combat the problem/provide the answer.

Has anyone tried a Mosler type arrangement, where 2/3 of the side screen is fixed in place, with a 1/3rd portion that can be removed/lowered?

That would be a lot simpler than trying to make the whole side screen removable?

Ive now got 2 sets of side screens..... The plan is to send a set up to my aluminium fabricator in China and get him to make a frame. I'll pull my finger out and get on with it.

Grant, may I just take this opportunity to say that I would be very interested in acquiring a set of your opening frames, the idea that I had intended to put into place has stagnated to the degree that I am no longer keen, but from what I have seen, your idea looks like a good one. Whilst we are on the subject, did you manage to get a set of tinted screens sorted out? If not, I may be in a position to help you out.

I don't know how much help it is but my Saker has opening windows although I must admit the standard of finish is o.k but could be done better. These are the best pics I have of them.

I am fairly sure it is make in NZ by Pilkington for the Saker. The screen I have is certainly a Pilkington screen. I'm not sure what's funnier... the Sheep Shagger comment or you "hilping miself" At least our wishbones aren't bendy here

I thought Pilkington was an Australian company – that went bust about 12 months back.

I know they certainly have a presence here in NZ but am not sure if they were Aussie based. I'll ask Saker tomorrow and post there reply up here. I am pretty sure the screen also fitted the Mararn http://www.mantacars.com/Mararn.html

If its the same Pilkington then they are UK based in Lancashire and are one of the Largest glass manufacturers out there.

In fact they have pioneered a product that would be perfect for the side window fogging problem in the other thread, SIDE WINDOW'S FOG UP its Self cleaning glass.

and thanks for all the input everyone, it sounds like maybe we can solve this problem between us. does anyone have an old side window i could have for us to have a propar look at.

I think the main critea is that we get maximum size opening, functions easily & the finshed design looks professional.

iam involed with fabriction & design of carbon fibre etc for cars, so i know quite few duffernt people that can help. also if anyone else on here can help please say or pm me.

This was the first approach.. I was planning this before the car was delivered. Once delivered I found that the reveal (where the side screen fits into the door) is not deep enough to have a frame and a seal between the side screen and the door....
