Front wheel offset on older wheels

Hi Chaps,

I have a set of Ultima rims that are the earlier ones made by Image. After fiting the body, it looks to me like the front rims are sticking out too far.. I am also having a problem with the tyres catching on the front of the side pods. It looks to me like they need to be set back about 5mm...
Had a chat to a chap called Mike over the weekend (thanks again for the tyres Mike!) who has a 1998 race GTR. He said that he had to reduce the offfset by machining off the spacer ring that is attached to the back of the wheel to get bigger tyres on the car.

Has anyone had this experience with older wheels? If so what is the best thing to do?

Am I best to leave and use a narrower tyre (which gives a wider front end track but less rubber on the road), or reduce the offset and get a 245 or 255 tyre on the front...?

Hello Martin,
Just thought that I would try and help here. I think the rims that you have there were Steve_D's originally but I don't remember that he had any sort of a problem in the department that you mention.
No doubt he may be along soon and can shed some light.

Don't know where my old rims ended up.
If they were mine then I had no issues with the fronts.
The backs jam on the side pod when on droop but then so do the replacements.

Hey Mart,

Say, I'm guessing, but have you not set the camber yet on yout car? You'd be suprised how much the top of the wheel tucks under the body, and hence away from the pod edges when it's all done.

I'm assuming also that your profile pic was taken with the body just resting, as the wheel to body positioning looks too far back and the clip doesn't exactly match the pod (and the rear clip for that matter). If you could post a side on pic, from hub height at 2m back, we could probably compare.

That pic is pretty old.. I will take a few pics later and show you how it looks now. I have not yet dialed in the camber, so this is probably the problem? Have you found that the top balljoint won't go far enough in for correct camber? I only have about 1/4" thread showing, and it looks like I would need more? Will get some pics....
