By putting on the Dymag Carbon/Magnesium wheels to a car, and to achieve the same performance gains of the lighter wheels, the body mass need to be reduced using a factor of six. Therefore, if each wheel is 5lbs lighter, than the body mass need to be reduced by 120lbs (54Kg). My question, is this essentially the same as a car that's 54Kg lighter? For example, a GTR weighs in at a 950Kg with Dymags (reduced body mass weight of 54Kg). So is this the same weight as a GTR with normal factory wheels but body mods that weighs in at 906Kg?

If your assumptions are correct (5lbs per wheel and the factor of 6) then indeed the all up weight of the std wheeled car would have to be 54kg lighter than the all up weight of the Dymaged car to have the same performance. So again taking your assumption that a Dymaged car could be 950kg then the std wheeled car would need to be 950kg minus 54kg = 896kg, no?

Lots of assumptions here though.

Thanks for correcting my subtraction mistakes... I was just wondering if the loss of wheel weight really equates to actual weight loss in the whole car itself... If it is, by putting on carbon ceramic brakes (rotors/calibers), then even more weight can be shed off. Possibly, bring the weight of the car down to low 700Kg.

Carbon Dymags on my Noble were 5Kg lighter than std.
I weighed them wheel for wheel with new tyres on the Dymags and nearly new on the standard rims.
Dymag claim a factor of 4 x un-sprung weight leaving the car equivalent to 80 Kg's lighter apparently.
That said you also have the benefit of most of the wheel weight at the centre with the lighter rim the gyroscopic effect on steering is also reduced markedly also less inertia for the brakes to handle.
All in all a basic but Very effective performance enhancer!

Hi, I think what you need to look at is the benefits and difference between sprung and unsprung weight - the body vs the wheels/much of the suspension. A car with heavy wheels and lighter body will handle differently to a car with light wheels and a heavy body. Lighter wheels usually respond to changes in the road more quickly than heavier wheels, therefore better handling.

I wonder how long those carbon fiber Dymags hold up in ordinary driving (everyday driving in an Ultima that is)

I wonder what level of driving skill you would need to take full advantage of these very expensive pieces of equipment, and at what point you would be better buying a race prepared car.
I dont think the Ultima can be all things.
If you want a very light car there are lots of things you could do before you get to 5/6/7k of wheels and brakes. Ali rad, c/f seats, dare i mention lose 2stone of personal weight.(not an attack on anyone here). c/f panels not ali. no radio(haha).
Lightweight audi engine and g/box.
Still cheaper than dymags and ceramic brakes i would suspect.

Just playing devils advocate.

You could argue the same with a 450hp engine in an Ultima, let alone a 500, 6 or 700hp.

I'd say most owners would add these because they want/can/it's their dream, not necessarily because they can fully take advantage of the individual components.

Plus it's fair to say, carbon wheels and brakes would look very cool wink

The difference will be noticable on the road.... After I sold my canam the new owner added the Ultima 18inch rims and AP brakes which I fitted for him.
These added loads to the weight of the car (nearly 50kgs from memory) and you could really feel the extra unsprung weight.

Not sure if the car was slower with the new wheels etc because it wasnt my car anymore to abuse like I did when I had it lol...
although from the above it would have been the same as adding around 200kgs of weight yikes
