Hello all,

I'm new to this forum but have recently become interested in building a GTR as I'm rather bored by the usual run of the mill stuff and am looking for a toy to replace my motorbike. I popped over to Stoneleigh and had a look at the Ultima stand and presumably some of your cars parked up on Sunday.I'm now doing what I expect all of you have done which is researching my prospective purchase - I've got the obligatory scare ride at Hinkley arranged for end of May. I'm certainly not after mega power (around 450) and want usability although I don't expect to use it as a daily run-about!

I'm currently looking at power plants - n/a is appealing because I can easily work on it but FI is appealing in terms of smooth running and mapping. There seem to be varying opinions ( aren't there always?) about SBC vs LS but I'm not looking to spend LS money. Just wondered if anyone had used the Audi V8 (or indeed any other non-chevvy power plant) or is it a non-starter and/or against the Ultima spirit(!)? (I've looked through most of the pages of this forum and haven't found much except a comment from Tuxman...but am prepared to be corrected)

Helmet on and await the onslaught....

Regards

Jim

Jimbo, oh Jimbo Jimbo Jimbo.
There are a fair few Ultimi running said motors now, it is certainly not as uncommon as it once was and apparently they aint half bad. They are such a small power unit that you will have enough room not only for your sandwiches in the side pods but a pick nick table (folded of course) in the now seemingly spacious engine compartment hehe

I think its an excellent choice. Engine + trans from the same car ... small, lightweight and high revving

A non-ultima owning dreamer here...I like being nosey in this bit of PH biggrin

Has anyone ever considered either the Toyota 1JZ or 2JZ twin turbo, inline 6 units found in various Supra's?

Or the Nissan RB26DETT twin turbo, inline 6 found in the Skyline GTR?

In stock form they have around 300BHP but we all know what they are capable of with some tuning.
The Toyota engine will actually support as high as 600BHP with stock internal parts (other than cams and valve springs).

Both engines sound incredible with the right exhaust system attached.

the idea has been thrown about but it was said the engines are both too long. having said that one race company was using a BMW inline 6 (M3 engine) for their racer. but there was a fair bit of chassis modding to get that to fit.

excellent choice is the Audi V8, all those revs hmmmm... I think you can expect between 7-10k for the engine and tranny with mods to 450ish bhp which is loads cheaper than an equivenlent SBC (which would need over 500bhp to match it) with porsche box, breathers adapters etc etc.

There are a few out there although I dont think those guys hang around here much anymore....

Factory wont be happy with you going this route though.

i thought that the LS series of engines was both smaller dimensionaly and lighter. something about overhead cams.

i think the inline 6 could work depending on how big it is. factor in 80mm for the bore size, add a bit more for the webs and you can probably get close to the length of the engine.

now whats the diameter of the LS7 bore again ?

Hi Jim_w,go for it don,t waste your time on a SBC ,pick a modern engine that will be reliable and clean running if i had the cash and time i would fit a Audi V8 tomorrow without doubt !!!! the std 4.2 l V8 makes 400 hp no problems and with the A6 diesel transaxle is a pretty easy fit ,Dave walker could map it and i hear that with a few mods 450bhp is pretty easy to get !!! if you want to go for the full monty a RS6 lump or the new RS4 engine would be awsome !!!!

Be prepared not to get a invite to the factory open day though !!! laughlaughlaugh

p.s. if i have not sold the can-am by xmas thats the way i,m going !!!

Yep I'm with Andy & Simon on this, infact I was looking a few months back on flea bay and a late engine with ECU, wiring loom, 4WD box, and headers was around the 4.5K mark. You would need to sell the box and get the diesel 2WD box as Simon says, you might be able to get the ECU 'chipped' which would give you some functionally. Then a fuel tank could be mounted across the back of the bulkhead and maybe twin radiators where the tanks were. I'm not sure about how this would affect weight distribution, would need more investigation.

That's what I thought Tuxman.

Just wished I'd hit the 'Buy it Now' button at £3250 last night instead of being a cheapskate and waiting till this morning to phone the seller to see if I could strike a deal.

Seems someone else beat me to it at £3k.

Gutted!
