Upgraded the gearbox last weekend. Replaced the standard 33:38 (0.868) 5th gear with a new 31:41 (0.756) set. Pics for those interested below.

Russ, just out of interest what state of tune is your motor in?
Reason that I ask is that the jump from a standard fourth gear ratio to your revised fifth ratio maybe a bit too steep without a fair bit of torque to bridge the shortfall. If it is just to be used as a cruising/economy gear ( tongue most definitely in cheek there ) then it should suffice yes
I am also using the same ratio fifth gear preceded by the first four revised ratio gears and LSD in a G50-03 trans-axle although I have over 600ftlbs of torque and the gears have all been calculated using 7,200rpm as a shift point ( this gives a theoretical top speed of 213 mph )

^ 730hp LS7 - over 500 lbs ft from 4000 to 7400 peaking at about 572 at 5500. I think a higher ratio may have presented problems without changing other gears as you suggest.

@RussF: Where did you get your engine? How satisfied are you with the engine? I need help by my LS7 engine decision... There is the 725hp Version from Amerspeed, the 725+ Version from Jeff Schwartz Performance... I would prefer the Jeff Schwartz Version I think... He has a lot of experience with LS7 tuning.

^ My engine was one of Jeff's creations. Very happy with level of service, patience and price. Can't comment on using the engine as it's not installed yet! The community is fairly split over engine supplier with different people having differing needs and priorities - have a read through some past posts and then make the appropriate calls.

No special tools required. All I used was a gear puller, torque wrench, a couple of new nuts for the ends of the two shafts (from a local Porsche dealer) some Loctite thread lock and a 1 5/8" socket for the larger of the two nuts. Depending on its condition you may also want to replace the ‘o’ring that seals the adjuster mechanism.
