Interesting to see the number plates on the Spider.
Means we shouldnt have too much trouble gettimg em registered
The 5 litre Ford powerplants they were stuffing under the canopies were seriously under powered, like not even 250hp !!
I believe that car was built here in Oz when Ultima had an Aussie distibutor and the cars suffered a few problems not being "factory" built.

I've really got to drive that track sometime soon - I've got a tentative booking in Dec, but would be good to do something a little earlier.
Looks like the Sydney engine tuners are getting to grips with the LS1 - this is a dyno run from a naturally aspirated LS1 - figures are at the wheels without drivetrain correction.

Hi Geoff,
Have you settled in yet?
Be sure to post and lets us know when your going to Eastern Creek, Id love to catch up and have a chat.
As far as that Dyno Sheet, hmmm, looks suspect. OK, I can believe 530 hp (Just) but 855 ftlbs of torque?!?!
Theres some kind of "correction" there. Since torque and hp are a direct correlation, a torque figure of 500 ftlbs would give a hp figure of about 310.
Am I looking at this the wrong way?
BTW, There are alot of "engine builders" in Sydney who love to play with there $100k plus dynos to give a figure close to what the owner wants to here.
The serious engine builders have the good old fashioned dynos, no correction, no print out, just a big old dial on the wall. Watch for peek torque and hp and then get out!!

Bear in mind that these are rwhp figures - the torque figures are meaningless without transmission correction to get back to a crank output number.
I've asked them to come up with a proper engine dyno run to get some crank output figures to look at.
This LS1 is running without a plenum - 8 individual throttle bodies for surprisingly sensible money - I'm not 100% sold yet - but I have a sneaking suspicion that these guys will be involved in my engine build.
Starting to get settled in - moving into a flat this weekend, picking up a car at somepoint next week - the container with all the toys in it should arrive at the end of October. We should try to get together for a beer sometime soon.

Geoff,
I had a chat to my mechanic/engine builder/automotive engineer/ mate this morning about that dyno chart and (after he stopped laughing) he said that he had recenly read about a test done (he thinks it was by the SAE) to show what kind of BS can be spun if you how to doctor the dyno correction figures.
They took one car and ran it on a you beaut fancy pants dyno that corrects for everything including (but not limited to) ambient temp, elevation, rolling resistance, the fact the driver did not get laid last night, etc, etc and came up with four sets of different numbers for the same car on the same day!!
The "real" numbers, right up to total and utter BS.
And all they did was play with the correction figures.
Hes going to try and dig it up for me so I can post it.
You see, there big money to be made in Sydney at the moment with lots of people modding their cars and dynoing them to compare with the mates.
Problem is, they might have spend several thousand $ on cold air intakes, exhaust systems, etc, etc and since they know their "basline" hp, they expect x plus y improvement because thats what they guys at the speed shop told them.
So, they turn up on a Saturday morning and the dyno operator asks them, "What have you done to the car?", Whats was you previous hp?", and "How much hp improvement do you expect to get?".
Them when he actually gets the car on the dyno, the owner expects 30 hp and only gets 15 hp, what does the operator do?. He changes say, the compensation for rolling resistance and hey presto, he gives the guy another 10 hp which gives the owner a total increase of 25 hp. Not the 30 hp he had expected, but at least theres a good "improvement" for the $ spent.
What happens if the operator is honest and tells the guy he only got 15hp? Simple, the owner tells hime that his dyno is $hit and is wrong and takes his dyno dollars to some else who will tell what he wants to here.
This happens all the time, and I could give you a few names of people to steer clear from if you want genuine figures.
And this kind of BS is why real racers what to see an analogue dial. No correction, No BS. He knows straight away where the mods hes done are going in the right direction or wether hes wasting his time and to start again.
Sorry for the long post, I just wouldnt like to see you get burnt.

Geoff,
After a little reading, I agree, without knowing gearing or RPM, torque values are meaningless, however I just crunched a couple of numbers.
Assuming a drivetrain loss of 25%, the hp at the fly wheel would be 530hp divided by 75 multiplied by 100 giving 706 hp.
I went along to a car show a couple weeks back and they had a Ford Capri with I think 900 odd hp. They were aiming to be the quickest N/A SBC drag car in OZ!!
I dont know mate...maybe I just way too cynical!!
BTW, If they can bring the car down to my mechanics dyno and reproduce those numbers he reckons he will buy the engine there and then.(And then pull it apart of course and see what theyve done!!!!)

Hi fellas.
I own the yellow Spyder these days.
Can anyone tell me who was driving it around Eastern Creek? any times?
I have been through a bunch a crap to get it re-registered. I have some reports that may help when it comes time for you to register your cars. I can easily send some info to you if you like.
Andy (too)

While I'm on the forums... I thought I would ask if anyone has a copy of the spyder build manual that they would be willing to send me (I'll pay).
I have e-mailed Ted about eight times over the last year to no avail. I guess he doesn't care too much about people who have bought cars second hand overseas.
I need to do a few things to my car and need some info from the manual. My door struts are stuffed, my handbrake is in the wrong place and my car needs a wheel alignment. I also want to try and dial-out some understeer, I have the rosejointed suspension and the Intrax shocks (I think) and want to know how to change the settings.
