Hi folks,

Just a short note following my engine failure back in April.

American Speed have kindly supplied most of the parts I need (or rather Charles Dunn needs) for free. Given that Santa Pod was the final straw and that drag racing is clearly outside of the engine warranty, I am genuinely pleased with the way in which American Speed have helped me out. NB Cam Follower failure is pretty rare (I am told).

Engine now with Charles being rebuilt ahead of sale (separate from car) - someone will get a bargain.

Tony.

I will add once again that changes in oil make up over the last several years have put lifter cam interfaces at risk. This is due to the removal of certain additives in the oil to help make cats last longer. there is a good thread on this from several months back those of you using non roller lifters should take a peek. lee

Blue - do you fancy it as a spare or to 'fettle'?

Nothing wrong with my engine and as Charles mentioned earlier today I have one of the most reliable engines around. However, the idea of Dart block and taking the power over 600bhp sounds appealing!

Here's my 2 pence on oil:
Hello if your engine is loaded with a FLAT TAPPET cam here's a heads up on the oil you must now use to avoid cam lobe and lifter failer or exsessive wear during break in & normal driving...ALL major oil companies have now removed fiction modifiers from all mineral based oils.mandated by goverments world wide...zinc & other phosphates / friction reducers have been removed from ALL SM rated ( street legal ) oils it seems these additives attack the cars catalytic conveters....since all new cars are ROLLER CAMMED engines these chemicals are no longer needed
So here is a list of oils & additives you can use & save your cam & its lifters from failer during break in period & driving
1 BRAD PENN / PENN GRADE oil your best choice
2 PENNZOIL GTP RACING OIL
3 VALVOLINE RACING OIL...DO NOT USE VR-1
Mates if you cannot find these oils localy there are additives you may add to regular mineral oils and MUST add to mineral oils during your cam & lifters break in period
1- GM / EOS / Engine Oil Supplement part # 1052367
2- Comp Cams oil additive # 159
3- Crane Cams oil additive
ALL THESE ADDITIVE CONTAIN NEEDED FRICTION MODIFIERS and must be used during cam break in and added to regular mineral oil during oil changes........ Dr.Dee:'(
ON SYNTHETIC OILS / AFTER ENGINE BREAK IN ONLY!!!!!!!!!
We like AMZOIL (RED) racing oil and Joe Gibbs Performance Racing Oil & RED-LINE & ROYAL PURPLE 100% sythn oils
DO NOT USE LOW VISCOSITY INDEX NUMBER OILS ie 0w50 / 5w 20 ect use 10W40 for street
Couple more tricks you can do!
You may also load lifters with a small laser burned hole in heel of lifter this small hole feeds direct oil under pressure to the cam lobes...greatly reducing cam & lifter wear.
An other trick is to have your machine shop cut a small vertical groove in all lifter bores , this oil groove will supply extra oil to lifter bottoms & cam lobes again greatly reducing cam & lobe wear .......

PS: PLAN B.... install a hyd or solid roller cam in your engine....and these race oils or additives & oil'n tricks will not be needed
Cheers! Dr,Dee

Fastco?

Why particularly not VR1? Ive just filled my Rover V8 engined car with it as I was told thats the preferred oil?
Do I need to find some friction modifier?! Or is it just bad oil?!

thanks,
G

I have always used VR1 precisely because of the lack of additives in other oils.. Always under the impression that VR1 was concocted specifically for these sort of engines...

Just a heads up (and I know advertising is "not on", but please forgive me this single misdemeanor for the benefit of the Ultima forum and Ultima builders after a genuine bargain).

I have today had 15 emails and 7 calls about the engine I have for sale on PH - too many to reply to individually. Some people have even been to see Charles Dunn to discuss things, but still I have no firm offer.

Given that I really need to "sell up and move on" (divorce, but hell, I'll be back to build another GTR in 2009), I need a firm offer by midday Sunday. Offers over £ 5,000 please for this exceptional engine (rebuild costs are close to that). Failing that, I will have to go for "option 2".

Remember, £ 11,000 from American Speed with postage.

Email at tony@ultimagtr640.com for contact details etc.

Tony.

Hello.... not pick'n on VR1 its good quality oil BUT!... ALL street oils now do not contain zinc & phosphates & other old school friction modifiers,... and FLAT TAPPET cam'd engines need these additives to live a long life.... Look for Valvoline that is labeled OFF ROAD USE ONLY or RACE OIL .... these oils contain the above mentioned additives.... if your roller cammed it does not matter use VR1 .
Cheers! Dr,Dee
