How Many Spyders Are Out There?

Following on from the "Are We There Thread' - I was just wondering how many Spyders are still on the road?

Off the top of my head - Me, stHotFast and Scooby-Doo-Do. Amy others?

PS - Could either of you guys give me the height from the ground to the top outer edge of a door?

They are indeed a rarity, I think SHF told me that there were only about 9 or so ever built
( he may well have been trying his best to boost residuals of course ).

A friend of mine used to own the 2nd spider built until he had been doing some work to it and had the rear wing removed and destroyed it at 30mph...it was an ex race car team who orginally owned it with some very special engine... he lost control and hit a tree.. i can find out which one/ pictures before if you guys want to know which car it was..dom

i was cleaning mine today in the garage as it was raining... I still love my spider and i'm only 28.

I was trying to figure out though why my headlight bulbs keep popping. - i believe it's due to stones or tyres hitting the connections. But i did find the chassis number whilst sorting them out :-)

Asked Ted and he reckons that around 50 Spyders were sold.

I prefer to say the car has been "enhanced" three times! But I would guess there are only around 40 left in the world - which makes them quite rare... I have seen 4 others at goodwood - 2 blue ones, a grey one and a silver one, but I guess with the great british weather, they dont come out too often. (Having just come back from 2 weeks in the southern Mediterranean - 30 degs and 100% sun every day - and has been for weeks - the UK weather can be a bit depressing when you have a spyder !

one thing to try - There isn't much room for the bulbs because of the covers being so tight -( because of the tyre rubbing issues), but I found you can bend the three connections on the back of each headlight bulb to 90degs from the normal. This allows the wires and connections to stick out to the side - giving around another inch of room. It could be the bulb connections are hitting the light covers. This fix will give you much more room for the bulbs. Bend the connections slowly and not too far and they will work fine.

And another bit of trivia - When I tried to get my ultima past the SVA (one of the first ever) the chassis number was 97086 (year 1997 and 86th Ultima to ever be made) The min number of letters is 8 (I was told) and so a rush job - added the letters AAA with a punch (the only one I had!) to the 97086 to make it legal, making it AAA09086. What is your chassis number? (we can also compare anorak sizes later!)

I know of a couple of spyders and sports without wings - their owners found that at any real speed the rear wheels left the ground! They need a rear wing to stay safe.

PS: Love your Tiger ! I alway thought they were great looking cars. I worked in a bar on Hayling Island as a teenager (about 200 years ago) and the manager had a red Tiger V8. Cant think there are many good ones left.

Any chance you could take a tape measure from the ground to the outer edge of the door SHF?

I'm thinking of doing something 'contraversial' (not like me!), but depends on the measurement.

26.5 inches from the ground to the top edge of the door, is this what you need? If not let me know......

That's lower than my 340R and I had no problems 'stepping into' that, so shall be glassing the doors in as part of my body-mods!

Ahh.... ok but dont forget that you will also need to "step over" the side windows..... They are another few inches above the top of the door....assuming you will have these fitted?...

I'm doing away with the side window and grinding the door lip down so it's flush with the rest of the door surface. I'll then be fitting a lower flyscreen to the front that'll taper down as it reaches the area where the doors 'windows' would have started!

I'm also planning to glass in the front clip as I'm relocating the rads to the side pods, so there won't be any need to go raking about under there all that often.

Why?

I have an OCD issue with geting all shut-lines ABSOLUTELY perfect, so would spend an age setting the doors and clips up... glass them in, and hey presto - no shut-lines to worry about! Just nice sleek bodywork!

There will be times when you will have to drive in the rain so grinding down the lip on the door would allow the water to run straight into the car whereas the lip may be enough to keep it out.

Had mine for around 4 years - ex factory demonstrator serial 995128 - just possibly the last one built by the factory - registered in 2000!
Have to agree with Steve about the side screens and lip on the door - you will get well an truely soaked should you get caught in the rain as the water will simply flow in! At least with the screens and sides - providing you are travelling at a reasonably speed - the water just goes straight over or around your head - just a little sad when you have to stop!!!

I sold my spyder about a year ago to a nice chap in Dorset- hope its still going strong. Dark Blue metallic one. I am 5 ft 11 and rarely used the doors- stepping over door & perspex- however kids and better half struggled to get a leg over into the passenger side. If I was you I would glass over the passenger side and restrict access to those long legged ladies that would regularly toss their nickers into my car.....
