sealing uv joints

In both my Sport and GTR moly grease is being thrown out of the uv joints and deposits itself over the engine bay and inside the wheel rims, especially on track days when things get a little warmer.

The grease is coming out between the flanges, has anybody else had this problem, is there a gasket available to seal the joints?

I don't have that problem on my car but seal it (on the outside) with a thin coat of transparant silicone. Works great.

It happened to mine once, when my old CVs were repacked. I bought some new ones from the factory and it stopped.

I believe the amount of grease is critical. Too much and you'll flick it out. If I recall, the grease in mine wasn't coming from the joint between box and CV but within the CV assy itself (next joint out towards the wheel). If you are in any doubt where the grease is coming from, just eye up the flicked out witness and that'll soon show it's source.

I agree though, tis very frustrating on a clean engine bay.

I have had this problem for years as I needed to take out my gbox a few time until i got my clutch sorted so the drive shafts had to come off. If you have the FORD type of drive shafts, you will be using the ali spacer on the gbox to hold the cv joint. If you look closely you will see there is a tiny gap on each bolt hole. thats where the grease comes out. I notice that the factory use the black sealer they use for the build. This will fix it. just use a stanly knife to break the seal if you need to take the shafts off. (or just use bathroom type sealer) .

An old gasket/sealing trick from the engineering trade.......get some very, very fine cotton/silk thread, form a single perimeter around the mating surfaces and combine with a fine smear of suitable sealant (silicon/instant gasket/sikaflex etc. Works a treat every time. Many light aircraft crankcase halves are sealed using this method.

Its quite easy Keith, put the smear of sealer on first, it holds the end of thread for you. And as for stub end fingers............think of those poor aircraft engineers...........all that messing with six foot props!
