Legal Life of V70A Tyres?

Just about to shell out for some tyres - I think V70A for the dry and undecided about a wet set.
I am concerned as to how long, especially the fronts are going to be road legal for. Even with my feeble driving the boomarang shaped grooves are going to wear down double quick and I can't see them complying with the 3/4 tread width at 1.6mm for long.
Do the 2 circumferencial grooves count as the "tread"? I'd just as soon not have this discussion with the plod or insurance company at a difficult time....
Anybody done any tread wear measurements?
