Front Wheel Clash with Bodywork - Wrong wheel offset???
Discussion
Hi all,
Got the car back from the painters today... Looks really nice.
Whilst it was in the air with the wheels off, I thought I would fit the shocks. This dropped the front wheels by around 30mm from the ride height bars position. When I fitted the wheels, there is a major clash between the tyre and the front bottom corner of the sidepod... so much so I couldn't even turn the wheel past it...
I posted about this problem some time ago...

It looks to me like I have an issue with the front offset. I have 16mm between the back of the wheel spokes and the front caliper. Is this correct? On the rears I only have 1-2mm.
Perhaps someone can tell me the normal offset of the front wheels?
The fronts have Pirelli 245/35 18" tyres which look fairly big to me. Even with the correct camber the top of the tyre is nearly touching the clam wheelarch.
Is this normal???
I am pretty sure that the pods are in the right position as I had to pull the front lip of the centre section over the front bulkhead to get it to fit. They certainally will not go back any further.
Any comments appreciated please as I am struggling with this one...
Many Thanks, Mart

245/35 is normal.
I have clearance of spoke to calliper of 4mm rear, 7mm front so it looks like your 16 is wrong somehow.
Are you using factory bits?
Steve

Everything is standard, AP brake setup, Intrax shocks. The wheels are early 18" ones when they were made by Image Wheels. I believe they may be your old wheels?? Someone mentioned this in my original post above.
It looks like my offsets are wrong. Do you know the offsets of standard wheels so that I could compare? I guess that's the only way to check for certain.
Thanks for the info!

Hey Mart, is the interference only on droop?
Does it interfer when on the ground?
Hi Lucky,Does it interfer when on the ground?
With the ride height bars in, I have around 2-4mm clearance from the pod when turning the steering. The interference is in the droop position. I have not checked with the car on the ground. My concern is with an outside wheel being unloaded in a corner and badly interfering with the pod. I would say that the interference is around 5-8mm into the pod.
I will check the offset tomorrow morning to see what I have.
Thanks, Mart
Hey Mart,
I found something similar when I raised my car with the shocks in position the front wheels 'bound' when turning, however it seems that most including the factory say 'its not a problem when driving'.
I also had the same thought...ie if you were trucking it round a corner, surely if a wheel came up on the unloaded corner, you would get the wheel rubbing the body!
So... I really don't know what the true position is. I do however remember a thread here somewhere, where someone has got the shocker travel altered for a shorter throw, and this he said was done for him by the shocker manufacturer.
I'd be interested to know the outcome! BTW I promise when business is not so frantic, I will come down for the cuppa!
cheers
Keith

She is painted and looking mighty fine at the moment, so worth a visit! You are more than welcome to call over.
I am going to start by reducing the front offset by about 12mm, changing the tyres, then looking at the geometry and shock absorber length... Will let you know the outcome.
Anyone know where to get the wheels machined? I was thinking of sending them back to Image, but it's quite a treck from S.Wales.

Just use a couple of rounds of duct tape on the inside of the rim to seal it temporarily and check for fit.
If that solves the clearance issue you/we can come up with a more permanent solution later

Where are the pictures then Mart? How was the trip over? Did you make the ferry OK?
Here are a few pics. Was going to get her out of the garage today for some decent pictures, but the weather has been pants. Just modding the headlights at the mo hence why they are missing!
Catch up soon mate,
Mart

It's actually House of Kolour Kameleon Silver. It's the closest match to the TVR Spectraflair Silver at a decent price, so Clive - you win for being the closest (although I did tell you my plans about a year ago!!) :-)
Pics don't really do it justice. It looks amazing in daylight. I am very happy with the finish.
Thanks for the compliments! Hopefully it will be on the road next year!
