i too thought about a diesel but it just does not seem right ie the noise and smoke

i was thinking vw phatom v10 diesel with a few turbos.
you vcan pick up a whole car for 12k so a smashed one at breakers wont be much...5 litres. tdi loads of torque?
just think audi and peugeot at le mans????????????? and it will do more than 25mpg
and if its noise you want just turn up the sterio

It is one of the engines I considered 5 years ago, using the Toureg V10.. same engine I think. I was told that the factory would not support me if I went ahead with it. As much as I can see the factory point for not wanting Ultima to become a mutant species, I still think that a proper TT desiel would attract more positive attention than negative. Blue Satin (I think) mentioned at that time that he had a mate who could get hold of one for a couple of K's and that made it a very tempting option. you vcan pick up a whole car for 12k so a smashed one at breakers wont be much...5 litres. tdi loads of torque?

The best thing about a desiel would be that it develops 90% of it's torque at under 2000rpm (1900 IRC) and that would also break the second mould, which would also make it ideal for the auto/sequencial box

Yeah I had better put a few of those guys in for that comment

I am currently researching hydrogen fuel cells, but you will be pleased to know that there is NO chance of finding any space to put them in an Ult

The LE Mans diesels are extremely quiet. Here's a cool in car video of Alan McNish in the American Le Mans Series, he's two laps down and ends up winning the race.....

I spoke to Ted a few months ago when i test drove at factory and he advised the car was always set up to sell with a SBC therefore he wasnt that interested in a diesel power car....the car would loose the important balance....lost possiibly with an LS7???
However in these times if we/he were to put a diesel high performance engine into an Ultima with good results i recon there would be quite a few extra people ordering an Ultima package...Times are hard and building a car last thing on peoples minds, but to build a car that returns 30+mpg and does 200mph would be very tempting.
Also a kitcar first........a diesel powered sports kitcar..come on Ted whats your thoughts??
V10 twin or quad turbo Ultima............

I very nearly bought a brand spanking new VW V10 TDi engine last year. The owner was looking for £3k if I remember rightly.
I spoke to the VW TDi V10 guru Ian Dawson about it... very nice chap - he talked me through the huge possibilities of the engine (and I mean HUGE!).
One wee problem though... it will cost tens of thousands to adapt and run in a non-VW application. Most of this cost is based on bespoke electronic controls (the OEM Motronic ECU is useless outside of its 'normal' application). Ian mentioned he could supply a suitable system, but the cost would have been prohibitive for a non-pro race team user!
The sump system was also an issue, but as I understood, that was ONLY a few thousand to sort out.
Finally... weight! It's a right heavy bugger!

yep the audi v8 diesel runs 2 ecu's so again they are the problem!! annoying as ive been in an Audi v8 diesel it was awesome!! in a light car i think it would be devasting apart from the smoke, smell and noiseI spoke to the VW TDi V10 guru Ian Dawson about it... very nice chap - he talked me through the huge possibilities of the engine (and I mean HUGE!).

i was initially thinking of buying a smashed up vw phatom and then all the electronics etc etc came with it all.
turbo pipes could be made and one/two turbos fitted where you wanted.. the car would provide all the necessary bits to get up and running except gearbox???? if a midengine gearbox was available in these modern times we might even be on the relms of paddle shift as well. Am i right in saying AUDI are bringing out a R8 diesel..
10 years down the road that might be an affordable transplant??????

a R8 has been built with a V10 diesel but i dont think it is for sale yet as they had some issues i believe??turbo pipes could be made and one/two turbos fitted where you wanted.. the car would provide all the necessary bits to get up and running except gearbox???? if a midengine gearbox was available in these modern times we might even be on the relms of paddle shift as well. 40mpg does appeal and 800ftlbs!!!!!!!!!
Just in hot off the press

' And from the late summerof 2008 you can even have the Q7 V12 TDI with an astonishing 500bhp and 750ft lb of torque! Good Lord.
WOW a standard diesel engine with 500 hp and 750 ft lb or torque........you wont need a gearbox, just a clutch....Imagine ??????????
ive seen a couple of V12 engines in Ultima sports but is there one in the GTR as chassis are not exact are they?

It can be done (if you get EVERY electronic sensor... and there's PLENTY of them), but it will still cost you 3-5k to get someone to crack the Bosch Motronic's for you so they will work outside the intended application!turbo pipes could be made and one/two turbos fitted where you wanted.. the car would provide all the necessary bits to get up and running except gearbox???? if a midengine gearbox was available in these modern times we might even be on the relms of paddle shift as well. In the end I ditched the idea and went for the 2007 Audi RS4 petrol engine instead. Similar problems due to it being a twin-ECU and Fuel Stratified Injection, but more easily overcome by sealing up the FSI ports, adding individual throttle-bodies and using an Omex ECU. Not so straightforward on a diesel.
how about a Duramax 6.6 ltr V88 twin turbo Diesel???
Banks powe rin the US have got 1200bhp and 1200lbsft out of these engines.....
