Looking at it again - first overtake was a no-no. Trying to overtake a queue into a bend.nono That TR3456? might not have seen him and shut the door. Naughty. Second one OK though?

Looks great fun, I notice he didn't brag about overtaking the hillman imp in his youtube title though :-). Impressed by how the Ultima completely out accelerated the E36 Evo onn the straight ....

Oh how I wish I could condense the next 18 months into a few minutes so I could have one out there

I'm a novice when it come to track days but from the safety briefings I've attended in the morning you are only to overtake with consent or when the track is opened up and you are able to nip by. First overtake was a no-no and like LuckyP says, if it wasn't for the presence of mind of the other drivers than it could have been ugly. The second overtake was still quite reckless.
I also didn't like the manner in which the BMW was sticking to close to the back of the Ultima, a good gap between cars to prevent accidents. If Ultima driver brakes early for example...

As a former Lotus Elise Sport 130 driver it is frustrating when you have a quicker lap time than others but slower in the straight, hence the couple of mutterings the BM driver makes when the GTR passes him on the straights then holds him up around a couple of bends.

First overtake was cheeky though...

But it is a track day not a race ?

This to me is something that seems to get forgotten ALOT !! from not just videos but track time also, fine on a go kart track with friends on slow karts not so on a track day with 1 ton plus pieces of metal.

He is pushing it IMO on a track which in some places has very little room for error and very little room for run off, each to there own but IMO that driving was aggressive and unnecessary in those circumstances.

I hadn't been able to listern to that clip, no sound on my pc. But, I can understand his frustration, but it happened to me a few times and I did not act like that.

I have just watched another one of trackpigs clips from Saturday, how close can he get to the Skyline... see http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cXksgst11Hc

Strange as apart from the fact the skyline driver kept losing control the M3 driver gave more room to him than he did to you ?

The bits I don't understand are:
1) I thought skylines were fast
2) I thought they were point and shoot (ie you cant go wrong)

How does the M3 (which isn't that quick - IE only a 13.7sec 1/4 mile) keep so close? and why does the skyline slip all over the place?

I suspect it's a very light M3 with a bit of tuning and fettling. As far as I know Skylines of this shape - R33 I think came in various forms from a 1.0 or 2.5 straight 6 2WD or 4WD to single and possibly twin turbo 2.5 4WD but these are hugely tunable, particularly the turbo versions. I'm guessing but from the look of that skyline it's an early single turbo - exhaust flames suggest unburnt fuel typical of a turbo version. The 2.5 made 190ps and the turbo made about 250ps so the beemer with 286ps or 321ps depending on variant would be pretty well off in that duel.

I saw a newer R34 Skyline at Brands once and it was amazing, so many electrical marvels that the guy driving it said it was hard to fall off the track. It squealed a lot and he was warned about his driving but to me it appeared to be down to the electronics and auto braking/power the thing just stuck to the track. Quite amazing really.

Of course anyone in a beemer just flew past him biggrin (not really!)

Hi
I was driving the M3 in question. I apologize if a couple of my overtakes were a little on the aggressive side.

when making the first overtake i tried to slow it down as much as pos so the driver of the triumph would have time to see me.
I was trying to put a couple of quick together after a very stop start day.

I have to say, a yellow ultima (or similar piece of kit) on track is always a car that others will put their cars and themselves up against. this kind of thing happens at trackdays every day.

For the record, my car has standard dampers, falken 452 road tyres, standard engine, full interior apart from rear seats. so its far from a stripped out racer.

I dont think its a trackpig either, its my favourite toy and it does its job. ;-)

Driving fast on a track is something very special.
A pilot will be faster in a M3 than a gentleman driver in an Ultima GTR720.

I think this guy in the M3, perhaps not a pilot but at least a good driver,
knows perfectly this track and has good results on it.

Fair enough but in most driver briefings I have been to they don't say all the OTHER DRIVERS on the track today are experienced so don't worry about pushing on an overtaking aggresively, you have wide variances of experience on track most of the time so you have to account for that rather than make assumptions, from trips to the ring that to me is where most accidents happen as people assume you have seen them.

Maybe the overtakes were a little aggresive but putting that aside it was nice to see a standard road car out pace the Ultima.

In the briefing - the drivers were either told to overtake on the straights by invitation only, or were not.

The M3 was probably hoping that a gap would open up after the Ult one of the other cars in the line on the overtaking manouver, but it didn't. The TR would have been well within his rights to take the apex but if he had he'd have found the M3 sat there!

Having said all that, once a trackday is underway, you often find yourself wanting to go past a car (or be taken by a car) just that little bit later than is deemed acceptable from the description in the briefing. By about 4pm on some places I've been it's a virtual free for all!!!

Has anyone mentioned that all the drivers we've seen in those vids need a extra pat on the back for going out with only a dry line - one wheel off (especially in that ult) and your grip is toast!!

Good point Pete. I am probably one of the few Ults still using Pirelli PZeros, although I have taken to using tyre softener. Actually as the day went on the car really did get better. For the first time I was able to balance four wheel slides around corners and the brakes seem to get stronger the more they are used (from event to event). I did RAF Marham a few weeks back and I had to stop braking so hard into the chicane as on the second occasion I was nearly sick in my helmet wink
