Air Cleaner Clearance

Engine fitted, Gearbox fitted, car off the trolley, all looking great except....my Air Cleaner fouls the rear clip? Maybe it's the colour 'Yellow' that's the problem?

I building a Can Am, I have an Edelbrock inlet manifold, Holley 'Street Avenger' Carb which has a tappered spacer beneath and a 14" x 3" Holley Cleaner.
Not being an expert on these engines I thought I would ask another question.
Help and suggestions needed.

You don't really want to go less than 3" on the filter or you won't be getting enough flow.
First thing is to find out how much is fouling and where.
Take the filter out and make some plasticine towers that can get crushed as the clip closes. This will tell you how much the filter has to drop.

Has your filter bottom plate got a pressed recess in it so that the bottom edge of the filter element sits lower than the top of the carb?

Hi Steve,
Yes the Filter has a lowered deep dished bottom allowing the filter to sit lower than normal. It touches on the sides where the rear clip has a sculptured upper area following the top air intake. 3/16" would appear to be the required amount to get clearance. Are there lower spacers available?

Do you have a tapered spacer and a thermal spacer (normally black)under the carb?

Hi Steve,
I have a tapered alloy plate that is 24mm at the front and 10mm at the rear, there is also a thin gasket beneath the plate.
Cannot see any reason for the fouling, I have now removed the rear clip to investigate further.
Away on business until next Thursday.

Have a local engineering company machine your spacer down.

Had the same problem, with a dished base I don't think you can go under a 3" filter as the top hat will foul the carb. In the end I went for a Summit oval filter HERE, BUT it still required the 'collar' on the alloy base to be cut off so that it sat flush to the carb top.
Not sure you would want to go to that expense now though, maybe as Steve suggests get a few mm milled off the spacer, but I would suggest, if you haven't got one already, a top filter as well.

Hi all, back from the first set of travels, until Monday when I go to Holland to buy another car, don't ask what it is, it's 'vintage', so you'll probably will not want to know? now for that spacer!!
