I have had a new exhaust system made for the LS7 in the Ultima
I'm thinking of getting the headers camcoated.
I'd be interested in feedback those of you that have had this done.
- does it materially lower temps?
- would you do inside and outside?
- I see there are different colours - I like the silver but it is only 700 vs 1000 for the other finishes - is this a problem?
- Can you recommend anyone - I found a link for someone in Cheshire but hope to find someone near Herts

Many years back we did a group buy very kindly organised by Stig.
The product was Cermachrome applied black on the inside and silver on the outside. Very happy with mine as I do very little in the way of cleaning inside my engine bay but the pipes look pretty good considering what they could look like with bare SS and no TLC.
Had my coating from new so no comparison for reduced temps but others have said it works well.
Considering the engine, 'box and complete exhaust system live in the same place any attempt to reduce the temp has got to be worth it.

See the post 'Header Dilema' as I just posted a photo of my CanAm headers and they are ceramic coated. They are mated to the oem stainless mufflers and I can touch the headers way before I can put my hand on the muffler boxes.
It will reduce engine bay temps and cool down time, all of my mid engine cars have ceramic coated headers.

I was hovering between Zircotek and CamCoat, both different methods and differing costs. Camcoat appear to be a 'spray' on type of application and the other (much more expensive it seems) is a plasma application. So comparison on longlevity, efficacy and overall value for money would be very useful to find out?

So for me the plot thickens now!
We have several who maybe interested in larger diameter headers for both SBC's or LS's, also, some guys who are looking for coatings to existing systems and I now have even more questions/queries.
1. From reading this are coatings applied to the whole outer surface of the header/flange/gasket face assembly?
2. It seems some have had coatings applied to the inside too, is this correct?
3. 1&2 being the case, why is it necessary, when the intention is to have a coating applied, to construct the system from stainless in the first instance? ( these coatings appear to give a grey finish anyway)
Could a Guru please explain?

These are mine. They are not compact but are built for power. I was advised that it is important to have as long a straight as possible where the exhaust first leaves the head. Also equal length tuned primaries, tapered collectors etc. The fabricator (Simpsons Race Exhausts) built the systems for the A1 GP cars so hopefully he knows what is best for power. The headers are 1 7/8 which is the same size as the LS7 exhaust ports and the rest of the system 3 inch. I requested that the silencers be small and free flowing. I don't have a sound reading yet but I think I will be popular with my neighbours

Both sides are more similar than the photo angle suggests They are not a mirror though - something to do with the firing order.
My car was built originally with an early SBC engine and so my MOT is visual emissions and no need for power sapping cats.
I plan to get them coated to help heat.
No comments on the wiring please - this is still the dyno loom and I will build a new one for final install in the car.
My LS7 engine was dynoed at 697 bhp.

To answer your questions.
1. Yes the coating covers the whole outer surface.
2. Yes most people like myself have had the coating applied to the inside too. This is usually the black higher temp coating.
3. The reasons for using stainless are firstly the one most people know it lasts. Stainless expands less than mild steel and can handle the heat cycles. Stainless also retains the heat which helps keep the heat in the exhaust which aids the exhaust gas velocity.
Hope that helps! I had my headers coated a few years ago by camcoat and I'm still happy with them. Mine were coated the same as Steves' cermachrome on the outside and black in the inside. The inner coating is poured in to cover the inside. The outer coating is sprayed on then the headers are baked in an oven to fix the coatings. They are then bead polished to give the chrome effect you see.

In fairness Simpsons did say it is unusual for a customer not to be demanding less than 95 db. This is not their recommendation for silencing the car but I asked them to put power above all other considerations. My Ultima is a road car and I want it to sound fruity.
