Ultima starter problems.

Anyone had any issues with the Ultima supplied starter? Mine has appeared to have died. Power going to it but nothing, no clicks or anything. Loads of battery power just nothing at the starter. It has been acting as if the battery was flat (turning over slowly) then springing into 100% life, then running slow, now nothing.
Do you know if they are serviceable, or just a replacement? Could be just bad brushes or a bad connection but not sure if they can be easily checked/fixed, or a "sealed unit"

My battery earth gave me starter problems, not enough paint scraped off and what was contacting was corroding.

Make a jumper wire and connect it to the switch side of the starter solenoid and take the other end to battery positive. This will confirm if the ign/start switch or relay are causing the problem.
It should be possible to strip the starter and solenoid to check for burnt contacts or worn brushes.

yep, loads of power at the starter end connections... so its a strip down job I think..Just doesn't look too strip down able... but will have a go.

If you are confident on the spanners and sure your earth cables are good, you can bridge across the two large contacts on the rear of the solenoid, this will check your high current circuit and also indicate where the problem exists (motor or solenoid). You can carry out the test with the starter on or off the vehicle but will need a pair of jump-leads if testing off. Be very careful if you do it whilst still fitted to your car, make sure its not in gear and you dont touch any earthed area when bridging the live terminals.....if you have not tried this before maybe the off the car test would be more appropriate and more controllable.
