03 Ford Mustang Cobra engine instead of SBC
Discussion
Has anyone gone the route of the 4.6L SOHC 03-04 SVT Cobra engine, or know someone that has, in an Ultima instead of the SBC? I got the idea talking to a friend that has one and liked the idea of the OHC configuration and not the old push rod style Chevy engines. I think that it might have some advantages over the SBC. 1) being the lighter valvetrain components and the more hemispherical combustion camber 2) the stock supercharger being replaced by a Kennie Bell 2.8L Mammoth with the 2.75 pulley.

the 4.6 motors are pretty impresive! i have heard of people putting over 1200bhp to the ground on STOCK bottom ends!! however they weigh alot thank to being iron blocked (think the 5.4s are ally though). also they are VERY wide (in DOHC config, not sure about the 2 or 3 valve per cylinder ones). now the LS engines WILL fit and can happily take the 2.8KB supercharger.

Chris.
PS. there is soon to be one coming out for the LS3 soon to.....speak to Total Performance is the US.

Show me a Stock N/A 4.6 Ford that has more power than a Stock LS3 !! Oh that's right you cant.....
Its to big to heavy and down right Gordy looking. If your a "Ford Man" then sorry but that's just the way it is....
They have supercharger version to get 500 bhp.... but the LS7 has 540bhp out of the box N/A.....
If you want to be different then fit a Audi (which is allot cheaper and Lighter, and the RS4 is 400bhp with throttle bodies) Making the car 90Kgs lighter.
Or a V10 Audi / BMW......
You may have got that I don't like the New Ford V8's nothing personal but I just would never use one.......
Saying that I would buy a Cheap Mustang as they are good fun for the Buck, but only as a toy not a series Sports car....

Yeah if I did go with the 4.6L I would deff do the aluminum SVT block and some other assorted aftermarket goods. Wow, 1200hp on stock internals. That is impressive. Yeah I want to be different while still using a USDM Small block engine. Less modifications to the chassis and frame I would think. If I did do the SBC egnine I would do the LS6 with either 2 turbos or the 2.8L KB supercharger.

Well true that the 4.6L in the 03' Cobra doesn't make that kind of power N/A, I guess that is because they desinged the engine for forced induction hmmmm. And no I am not a Ford man just a performance man. They do make a aluminum engine in the 4.6 modular engine just like SBC use to come in cast iron and were heavy. Oh hell yeah the LS7 is a mean machine, so is the Saleen S7 which is a 7.0L also, with 750 bhp. Its to big to heavy and down right Gordy looking. LOL! but enough with all the brand bashing, how much modification is needed for the audior the V10s?
Yeah that is one thing that I was worried about was the Clearnce, that is why I liked the KB which is more shorter than others like the 6-71 blowers. And not having clearance issues with centrifugal superchargers. One buddy of mine said I think jokingly, that I should put a KB with 2 turbos on it. I said that he was crazy. What kind of fuel management system are the majority of people using with fuel injection on the Ultimas? I was looking at the AEM stand alone systems cause I have had some experience with them on other cars.
A 4.6 with a supercharger is a heavy engine compared to an LS.
It's also really wide.
The forward facing inlet of the LS9 SC may be a problem on a mid engine car getting enough air to it.
On Crafty's SC LS2 we had the blower inlet turned around to better suit airflow. (Before Mosler did)

the twin charge thing has been done by the ford guys. they run stock M90/112 (cant remeber wich one!) and then two pretty large turbos, T70/72s i think, and push about 1200bhp at about 45psi. its alot of boost to make the power, but they are making somehting 200bhp more lower in the RPM band to the trubo only setups. plus the lag is reduced/masked by the superchager.KB on a LS engine would be good. and as the blower sits the conventional way around, with the pully at the front and the intake at the rear, it should be easier to package into the ultima.
Chris.
So yeah I think that I will go with an GM Alloy LS2 block or either get Dart to make me one... I wonder if they could make some custom heads also, a SOHC LS2 engine. But for real I think that I will get an the LS2 with the CR5 heads or the equivalnat, and do some machine work with the KB 2.8L. Although I really love the sound of a turbo, its like foreplay till it kicks it
