Bump Steer; Will I notice the difference?
Discussion
I've just done the bump steer check/adjustment on the GTR.This involved clamping a dead straight spirit level, about the same length as the rim diameter ,to the brake disc each side with the shocks off and chassis on blocks at ride height. The suspension was raised and lowered and the spirit level checked against a level/raised and lowered string parralel to the chassis .The nearside was perfect and showed no deviation. The offside steered out by 6mm on lifting the suspension through its full travell.I had to remove the rack bolts this side and loosen those on the other side and drop the rack on the offending side and clamp in a position on the chassis which gave no toe in or out on full suspension travel. What amazed me was that the rack only had to be dropped by 1.5 mm to acheive perfection.I then filed the holes replaced bolts and checked both sides;perfection. Then checked the tracking;no adjustment necessary. All this took 7 hours. Will I notice the difference?
Incidentaly I have an Audi with 205,000 miles and Land cruiser with 110,000, miles and have always done the steering geometry with string.Never had any adverse tyre wear , all these complicated steering alingnment rigs at the tyre places are a waste of money and give rise to more problems than not as the people using them havn't been tought the principles of design and been taken through the sring method first.
