starter motor again...

My dead starter (an old Hi Torque one - Ultima supplied many years ago but NOT the new ones) died. I tried to resurrect but no joy. Ultima want around £350 for new one! (including VAT post etc) which seems a lot. (and I am a tight g*t!) But it is a "special Ultima one" they tell me !?

As it will be a couple of weeks until they get some in, thought I would ask if anyone knows of a cheaper alternative, or is the "ultima" starter really worth the extra £150 or so compared to "standard" starters. ???.

yep, i'm sending off to see if it can be fixed or not, if not it will be a new one.

why specific to ultima?? hi torque starters available at real steel and summit in the USA...

Nothing, other than the fact it will need to fit and have enough throw to engage properly, the latter being very important!

I fitted a porsche one to mine, has to be the largest one and started the car every time on the button (still is as well 15k and 7 years later) and cost around £150 or so....
Mine was fitted to the gearbox side tho, is yours?

yep is on the gbox bell housing - outside. I will try Real Steel as well... sounds a possible for a replacement.

were is your ring gear then? on the gearbox face of the clutch or the flywheel?

ring gear is on the flywheel, using a tilton twin plate clutch with a saab slave cly. Bit tight but it works ok. I have ordered a new starter... will let everyone know the results.

How do you like the Tilton? Had one in my old 350Z (street single) that was one of the best mods I have ever done to any car.

Great! I started with a triple plate but went down to a twin plate which is more road usable. Never any slip, easy to work on and a fair price for new plates.
