LUG BOLTS BROKE...................................Questions.

Took the wheels off the car to clean the calipers, suspension, back of the wheels, underside, etc, etc, etc...... When I put the wheels back on, I torqued the lug nuts to 65 LBS (as the manual states) and two of the lug bolts BROKE!!!!

A few questions:

1) Anyone have any factory lug bolts they want to sell? Or, any better/stronger 'aftermarket' options???
2) How do I replace the lug bolts??? Do I take off the piece where the lug bolts come out of that screws to the face of the rotor with all the little hex screws?? If so, what is the correct torque to put those little hex screws back on??
3) Has this happened to anyone else?? Seems sort of dangerous....
4) Any other help/suggestions are appreciated!!

I just sent you a pm. I had this happen too only I was erroneously using 75-80 lbs so no wonder they broke. You'll need to remove the upright and take them to a shop with a press to remove the hubs. They will need 5 new studs AND new bearings. The bearings get destroyed taking the hubs apart. I just bought the bearings from Ultima as my shop here in San Diego couldn't find a replacement bearing. They must be some really obscure size as he has access to hundreds of bearings and couldn't find replacements. I bought ARP studs from Summit Racing for about $20 including shipping (part #ARP-100-7708). Give these parts to the shop and let them take the hub apart and put the bearings back in. I needed new races too. You just can't do this without a press. The shop I picked is a well known rear end shop that works with all kinds of cars and trucks. I can give you their name if you'd like.

I'm surprised you could not find the bearings as they are the normal bearings for a Ford Granada 1985-92. I expect the car was available in the US but don't know what it was called. Anyhow, Ford don't go off and design special bearings so I would expect the same bearings to be used elsewhere in Ford. When you have stripped the hub down the bearing numbers are engraved on the race so you should just be able to buy the same from a local supplier or on the net.

I used Quinton Hazell parts which may not be available in the US.
QWB531, QWB530 for LHF, RHF.
QWB532, QWB533 for LHR, RHR.
They have different numbers left and right because the bearing set comes with replacement nuts which are left or right threaded.

Can't think why the stud would break as the 60lb I use on mine always seems barely enough to stop it coming undone let alone deal with the forces being applied under braking.

Thanks Steve. I think the Grenada was sold in the US but it must be a different model. He says the US Grenada bearings are totally different than what I rec'd from Ultima.

Yup the Granada in the USA is a huge sedan same sort of thing as a lincoln continental Circa 1980.
As opposed to thr UK offering of about two thirds the size.

ETS. O.P. have you had the wheels fitted on at a tyre centre before?
Did they use an airgun?
I had that happen to a VW Transporter a few years ago.
