Right I want a transmission.

What do you guys have?
Where from(company)?
Costs(£)?
Anything else needed with the transmission(clutch/Starter etc)?
Why do you have your particular transmission(cost/better gearing etc)?

Ivan, it really depends on what you want to do with the car and how much you are willing to spend. Also the type of engine and to some degree your expected power/torque levels!
If you already have the answers then it may help narrow down your options.
The G50 series are popular all rounders.....£1500 ish for a second hand one or $10750 for a rebuilt G50-52 from CMS (this model includes LSD).
Tons of info on the web about the varieties of porsche transaxles, Stig's build site for example. California Motorsports also have pics of most models which may help you identify which series a particular box comes from. Sometimes transaxles on e-bay etc have inaccurate details/model numbers advertised, so best to fully check before you bid!

Have just gone through the box select-find process myself.....lots to read up on first and I would say dont be in a rush to buy....do a bit of homework first! And do consider whether you might want to upgrade later..(engine power and box ratios)

I have G50/03 and I'm fussy. Can't fault it.Hard to find as used in many kit cars.Bought mine from a Porsche breaker/repairer in Bham who has sold loads but has never been asked for one by a Porshe owner![reliable].Cost me £2000 plus VAT.Also if you supply your own you will need a certificate of reconditioning to an as new standard because it will not be covered by the factories certificate of newness.[That's if you want a current style reg number]

You can't go wrong with a G50 03 with std ratios(unless you wanna go 200mph!!)

Just trick it up a bit with a Quaife ATB (Automatic Torque Biasing) diff, and you'll be floating outta corners like a pro racer!!!

Maybe not your cup of tea Ivan but currently a G50-0 on e-bay, same ratios as G50-03 I think?
Might make a good starter box to get someone going or as a rebuild/upgrade basis!

Hi Ivanj

the ZFQ has the Quaife ATB as standard equipment, you can also bolt an external oil pump to the rear case to add to the oil capacity and cooling. At the end of November two Superformance GT40s equipped with ZFQ transaxles finished 1st and 2nd in the Kyalami endurance race without coolers with an ambient temperature of 30 degrees C. We checked the temperature of the ZFQ and got a reading of 115 degrees, well within the temperature boundaries for the oil. We put this acceptable reading down to the fact that the ATB runs so much cooler than a plated LSD.

Regards

Chris.

Has anyone fit a ZFQ to an Ultima yet?
It looks like a nice unit, but not sure if it'd fit without chassis mods.
Id be happy to try one out, I've got two Ultimas at my shop.
Thanks
Jeff S

I don't know of any that require chassis mods however each different box type will need a rear mount frame specific to that 'box type. This will either be supplied by the factory for the 'box you have selected or you would need to fabricate your own. All the rear mount frames will attach to the same mounting points already part of the chassis.

Different 'boxes will also need different adaptor plate, starter motor + mounting, clutch, flywheel, ring-gear and shift rods or cables.

Hi Guys

I will be working with Andy Burrows of Gardner Douglas and he will be supplying and installing LS/ZFQ power train packages for the Ultima's.
When Lee Noble first designed the Ultima he used the ZF transaxle with great success. The limiting factor with the ZF is that, its was difficult to obtain and is designed for 400HP. The ZFQ addresses these problems as they are manufactured by R T Quaife here in the UK and are a nut and bolt replacement for the ZF. The ZFQ is also rated at 600BHP 550 FTlbs of torque.
The ZFQ need no adapter plate to fit the LS Chevy and the ZFQ also has a flywheel that will take 10.5 inch clutch.
The ZFQ is made exclusively for GT Transmissions LTD web site www.gttransmissions.co.uk.

Regards

Chris.
