Hi,

I've got a project planned and need a transaxle, I'm using a ford 351w pushing about 430bhp and similar amounts of torque, and have read that the porsche line of transaxles are good, also the newer vw/audi ones...
which would you choose? and what model/year of cars were they fitted to. (i.e. I've been offered a 5 speed from a porsche boxter for next to nothing, would this do?)

Many Thanks

Daniel

Not many guys using Ford power to drive their Ultimas. Why did you pick the 351 out of curiosity? I think your bigger question is what adapter plate are you going to use? I would call Kennedy Engineered Products here in the US to see what they offer for adapter plates. Then you can go from there picking the transaxle. I can't imagine how much an adapter plate would cost if there isn't one already available.
Good luck,
Paul

Ian used a G50 on the Ford 351, pretty sure he got his adapter from Kennedy which is were almost all of the adapters seem to come from.

While I was planning my project I had a chat to elite racing transmissions, who have a couple of boxes that can cope with up to 500nm. One is sequential and really quite compact with a price tag of £5k which I took a fancy too!

choosing the 351 because I've got one really cheap...
The adaptor plate isn't a problem, I have full milling facilities here so can make one off's.
I've been offered a A4 box cheap, which is a transaxle, designed to power the front wheels of a Audi A4, so no flipping etc to suit the roll in a Mid-engined/rear wheel drive setup...
I've also been offered a RS4 engine which is considerably lighter than the ford unit.. and can be easily tuned to give better power... which I've been told would fit the audi a4 box without too much fuss. thing is will it hold with the power? anyone know?
A G50 is obviously the best choice but what are the costs involved usually? considering that I will rebuild it with a quaiffe LSD with new seals and syncro's where needed.
Thanks for those posting above, and the car it's going into isn't an ultima, it's a project I'm working on.. powertrain is the one thing thats getting a bit confusing as there are a lot of choices.
Many Thanks

Daniel

Daniel, as far as I know the 2.7 diesel Audi transaxle is the one to go for, the RS4 engine is an excellent choice.

Speak to Scotty Boy he's got exactly that set up.
