Just got back from a 5800 trip with the C5 to Phoenix Arizona.
Phoenix is only 4 hours from Las Vegas (also known as Lost Wages), and our plan was to play in the baseball tournament, then head up to the SEMA show in Vegas. Unfortunately, our team was not very good, and we didn't make the playoffs, so I was done Thursday afternoon. Didn't feel like hanging around Vegas for 5 days waiting for the show (we already had our ticket for the show!) so we headed home. Sorry we'll miss you Jeff..maybe next year.
The good thing was the C5 was more than able to get me home in a tad over 2 days, with only one warning for speeding. (what's with your State of Texas, Mack?? I got stopped for doing 75 mph in a 70 mph zone !!. Most interesting was there was a box on the warning slip that noted the "race" of the driver!!. That would never fly in Massachusetts.
However, now the reason for this post.
The C5 has a computer that keeps track of all driving details.
Here's some of them.
Average speed for all highway driving...67.4 mph
Fuel Mileage.American gallon............28.6 mpg
When I left on the trip, I had just turned 70,000 miles on the odometer.
Temperatures ranged between 40'F to 97'F.
Oil comsuption ..1/3 qt Mobil 1
Altitudes were from Sea Level to almost 8000 feet.
Speed limits ranged from 40 mph to 75 mph.
If I had it to do over again, this is the engine I'd put in the CanAm. The LS1 is drive by wire, so that eliminates the throttle cable. The engine block is aluminum so is lighter than the 1970 iron block I'm using now. It honestly has enough power for the Corvette, so it sure does have enough for a car more that a thousand pounds lighter.
One of the reasons I chose the 350 block was the availablity of an exhaust system at that time, but I now understand there is a supplier for an exhaust system for the LS1 engine.
Just something to think about for you future builders.

75mph in a 70? You've got to be kidding? They bumped up our speed limit to 70 several years ago. When it was 65mph everyone drove 74mph and rarely got tickets. It sounds like they're trying to keep people from going 79mph. Sorry you got stung for this. Would have been fun to meet up with Jeff in "lost wages". My wife won't let me look at the photos from his trips anymore...too many women in itzy-bitzy-bikinis!
Cheers!

Jack,
Sounds like a fun trip. I've driven across the US several times, and have special memories from each time, just so much to do and see out there!
About the LS1/LS6, I believe only the Corvettes used the drive-by-wire system, the Firebirds/Camaros use a throttle cable. An LS1/LS6 is the engine for my GTR - no question. Lots of speed parts are available, there is software to tune the factory PCM maps, and they are lightweight/reliable/effecient.

No problem, it was only a warning.
It was 7:30 in the morning, and I had the cruise control set to 75. The cop was coming the other way, did a U turn on the dividing grass, then came after me.
Thought of flooring the Corvette (just kidding), because I couldn't believe he'd come after me for just 5 mph over the limit, but he did. I think he had other things he was looking for. But I have to say his radar sure was accurate. I blamed my speedo being off to the Michelin Sports I changed to. He agreed!!

I got "done" in Kingman, AZ., driving from the Grand Canyon to the Hoover Dam. I was doing about 120 and he was hiding behind a bridge abutment. He cited me for 95, which was an acceptable compromise. $100, IIRC. And I didn't have to tell my UK insurers.
It wasn't an Ultima, though, a crappy 2 litre Probe.

Heres a couple of quick stories for ya...my missus was busted traveling at 130 km/h in a 100 km/h. She said to the cop that she was just keeping up with traffic and how she was really sorry and so he books her for 110 km/h. I then wrote a letter on her behalf about about how "out of character" the incident was (totally clean record till then) and she got off completely!
They even refunded the fine she had already paid!!
Me, I get done for.. get this 62 in a 60 zone, down hill, fully loaded truck!! Go figure!!

I hope that you had enough money left to take the 'hardhat" tour at Hoover Dam. That takes you into the bowels of the dam to see what a a lot of power is really all about!!
I still have the hardhat you have to wear. Use it when working under the lift..

We did take the tour, yes. Very, very impressive. Although queuing up in the heat wasn't quite so much fun! Not sure how a $5 hard hat is going to help if a 1500lb car falls on you, though!

We're fortuntate enough to have enough height in the shop for a ramp lift. The hardhat stops the flesh from making contact with mufflers, pipes, frame rails etc...
