Speedo Wiring Problem

I am trying to rewire the VDO speedo in the dash after the previous owner disconnected all of it and cut away the loom pick up for the sensor - useful! I have got the speedo with a positive feed, negative feed and the lights working. I have put a new VDO sensor over the pick up on disc on the drive shaft but am unsure how to connect the Speedo to the sensor. I have the screened wire but am not sure what to do with the inner wire, outer copper wire or any other wire necessary to link it back to the speedo and which terminals to attach to etc etc. Can anyone give me some muppet proof advice??????????? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.
