G50 / 20 6 speed Gearbox
Discussion
I know it's probably been done here before, but could somebody let me know what the G50 / 20 6 speed box is out of, and is it pretty straightforeward to change it over from the 6 speed Getrag box please.
Just found out its from a Swedish 993 they did it for alpine driving ?

no Russ it isnt an easy swap...
weve got a G50 20 in at the moment and the starter is on the same side as the Trag(crap to remove or change) but it can go either side, it uses the rods to change at the back of the box(autobionics converted on ours) as opposed to the Trag changes on the side with cables.
Its a great box though with Ultima friendly ratios and imo would be worth the effort, we will soon have a cable system that will work on the right or left.

You can get it from the factory, kennedy engineering or from Gardner douglas... will be over £1.5k for all the bits you need to replace.
On the plus side you can sell the adapter box etc to help fund the change but its not a quick swop eaither as you have to consider the gearchange as well, drilling out new holes in bulkhead etc.

Dom, already have a getrag 6 speed on a 600+bhp supercharged motor and have been told that the getrag box causes the engine to use more revs "and juice" the G50/20 would be a better option but I am open to all suggestions I would actually prefer the right hand shift 5 speed what do you recommend ?

Russ dont jump too fast for a 6 speed...I test drove a 996tt at the weekend and spent as much time operating the clutch as accelerator pedal when going for it....You dont need a 6 speed box with all that torque...

Hi Domdom
I have a 996TT box in my Ultima but with a taller 5th and custom 6th. The ratios suit the chevy revs down to the ground. 6500rpm rev limit with my motor. Mine is geared for 225mph in 6th at 6500rpm. This makes 6th a great cuising gear. Although 1st is a short gear it suits my setup as I have an unsprung triple plate clutch and hill starts in second would not be much fun. It's also helpful in traffic.
Russ the G50/20 in my opinion would be a good choice for that motor. Would help when cruising around europe as your looking to do.
Most of the 5 speeds to not have a tall enough 5th gear as standard. But you could always change the 5th gear.
I have an adapter plate, flywheel, clutch and starter for a G50 up for grabs at the moment!
I'll give you a call tomorrow!
Regards Dave
