ZFQ transaxle in a Ultima GTR
Discussion
Hi all. new guy here. I have been coming to this forum for a while now researching on an upcoming Ultima build. As with most mid engined car builds, the transaxle brings a lot of debate.
I am interested in the ZFQ for various reasons and was wondering if anyone here has used it on their Ultima. I have emailed Chris who is the go to guy for ZFQ questions and he mentioned there is guy in the UK using these on the ultima.
preliminary measurements indicate the transaxle is very similar to the porsche boxes. (at least the distance from the bellhousing end to the side flange)
Any info, thoughts, pics are welcome
Cheers Robert

not heard a great deal but apparently the ratios are not suited to the Ultima (with big V8 power) and at the moment there are no ratio options.
That statement is somewhat lacking, a lot depends what you want to do; go fast or get there quick? After all the ZF was used in the GT40, Pantera and BMW M1 all running big V8 power. There are racing GT40 replicas running the new ZFQ, although I do believe available ratios are currently more limited than the original ZF. That said the demand for ZF/ZFQ transaxles has wained with current market conditions and an original ZF can be had for less than a built and modified G50. There's a good selection of gear and ring & pinion ratios available for the ZF, which I suspect will come on the ZFQ too as Quaife/GT Transmissions develops it out further. A dog engagement version ZFQ is due out this year I understand.I spoke to Andy Burrows at Gardner Douglas last week. They had a ZFQ due to be on display at Stoneleigh, but as I told Kyle the ratios they have at the moment do not really suit the chevy. I was told that the new ratios that Quaife were looking at producing may not be happening due to internal clearance issues. I guess we will have to wait and see.

You are right, the gears are not ideal. However, Chris mentioned via email that they are working with quiafe for a ZFQ geared for the Ultima crowd. I really hope this comes into fruition because it would be a great choice. The fact that this box uses a regular bellhousing and regular flywheel clutch disc etc is really appealing to me.
Hi Guys
I can confirm that Mike Quaife and I have ordered 10 ZFQ Ultima / Gardner Douglas units today this new version of the ZFQ will have the 3.5 crown wheel and pinion that you require.
We are working with Andy at Gardner Douglas to bring this package together.

I was told these boxs couldnt take more that 550ftlb with no real chance of them ever being beefed up to take more, is this consistent with what other have experienced or been told?Regards Dave

Hi guys
With the development of the new Sperformance GT40R and LS7 powered cars, plus more requests coming in for all out race transaxles, we are pleased to announce a new optional process for the ZFQ called Superfinishing.
The explanation of Superfinishing is hear on Rem's web site. Benefits - Material : REM Surface Engineering
www.remchem.com/page3-34/Material
This process has many benefits and reduces the need for running in your transaxle, the cost is £300 per unit and must be requested with your order.
