The factory can supply you with a re-conditioned G50/03.

Mark,

I bought my Getrag gt3 6-speed with lsd here in Germany brand new for about €8,000.
Second hand is way cheaper, of course.

I know where there's a rebuilt G50 with 60 miles on it. It's a PH member, I'll get you his handle tomorrow.

Here he is:

I saw the box at the weekend.

Sorry about the thread hi jack but I will also ned a gearbox soon. What is the rules on using a second hand gearbox when it comes to the SVA and registering the car? Do they stipulate that a second hand box needs rebuliding to a new condition? Do they always check that this has been done?

David.

If you are planning a new engine (LS etc) then the tranaxle should count as the 'single reconditioned item'. Documentation to support it has been rebuilt would normally be sufficient, however if it looks damaged, doesn't select or drive properly or is pi"£$%g oil out, it will fail the inspection!
£1000.00 - 1500.00 quid will source a decent basic used unit (g50/00---g50/03 types). Another 1500-2000 should get a reasonably good rebuild. If you want upgraded bits and pieces you might be looking at $14000 from a reputable source like CMS. (G50-52 maybe)
The hard part is deciding what you want the car to do (street, track or top speed etc etc) Then, with proposed engine spec to hand, look at which box is most suitable. Hopefully if you haven't blown your budget before this stage you can include some custom ratios during the rebuild. Obviously the box becomes as, and frequently more important than engine HP readings.

Thanks for the replies.

My proposed build is for an Ultima which will be a road car but also a track day car, maybe 20 track days a year.

Engine choice at the moment is a built LS7 with 650-700bhp, Motec management etc. Top speed 200 mph would be nice but I won't be entering top speed drag runs.

The gearbox choice is confusing me somewhat. I don't mind were the postion of the shifter is because I drive LHD cars all the time so this is not a concern.

I do like sequential shift systems which I have seen on the 6 speed gearboxes but this is not essential.

Should I be looking at a 6 speed GT2/GT3 gearbox or a 5 speed G50?

Cheers,

David.

A five speed is all you need. A four would also be fine as the engines we use have huge amounts of torque so loads of gears to keep the engine in the power range does not apply.
Having said that a tall sixth gear could give a nice high speed cruise or the potential to go 200mph.

The four speed currently on e-bay might be worth a bid, they are a strong well built yet lightweight box with a good cruise fourth gear, should work quite well with an LS3/7, even with later upgrades.
The sand racers (quite a demanding group) seem to rave over the old four-speeders.
Six speeds might sound great on a spec sheet or down the pub but when first is virtually redundant whats the point in carrying it along for the ride?
As you can probably guess, simple stuff wins for me most of the time.

Good luck.

yep i agree the crown wheel on the 4 speeds are huge and they look like they will take some serious pain, perfect for a blower application.
