Dear all!!

I'm thinking of using cables instead of the rod linkage from ultima, as i'm not sure how it will work on a centre st configuration.

It would be great to know your opinion, and also where would you get it from.

Thank you very much!

greetings from Barcelona!

Hi

we will soon have a cable system that will run in the centre or on either side for a G50....

the right hand rod shift (right hand drive cars) is very clunky but quite novel, the centre shift system is a much nicer/smoother change. I would like a right hand shift on cables if i was building from scratch, i hope that helps

I got my cables and shifter from renegade hybrids, then I built my own bracket to hook the cables up to the G50. There's still some fiddling around needed to make it shift nicely, but it is much easier to use than the rod linkage.

I ditched the Renegade Hybrid shifter and moved to a Porsche 996 unit. I can now get both 5th and reverse for the first time and shifting is much smoother all around. I have a CMS side shifter on my G50/52 transaxle.

Any idea on how long before you have the cable system available ?

I have been down the road with cable shifters. I have a CMS side shifter with cables. I also have the new billet shift box provided by CMS. The system now works very well but not without some complaints. First of all when I bought mine, the bracketts to attach the cables to the transaxel were not avilable from CMS now they are, that makes life much easier. Still not resolved is the interface between the shift arm that attachs to the side shifter to provide across the box motion. THIS IS A BIG DEAL. The shifter as supplied had a 1/4 inch set screw with fine threads holding this arm onto a round shaft. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. First of all you do not use fine threads in Aluminum. Second of all you could not get enough pressure with this set up to keep the arm steady. I have fixed mine but although I endorse CMS'S billet shifter bracketts and side shifter I WOULD NOT BUY THIS UNTIL THEY ADRESS THE ITERFACE PROBLEM WITH SPLINES. CMS HAS INDICATED THAT THE FIX IS IN THE WORKS AND INDEED MAY BE ALREADY AVAILABLE. Lee

Lee,

It sounds like we have been down similar roads. I drilled the shaft on the CMS transaxle side shifter to pin the arms as every time it got hot back there the set screw would slip and I was back to square one.

Out on track last weekend, was my first time top really enjoy the car without issues and although I'm happy with the shifting movement of the set up now, the 996 shifter is a litlle short and set in front of the seats so I found it quite a reach for 3rd and 5th. The hefty price tag on the CMS billet shifter has stopped me getting one to date, but I'm leaning more toward it now for reach.

A centre shift is all very well but would severely restrict how much camping gear you can get aboard for the Le Mans or Stoneleigh trips.

Shifter Mechanism will be available from Ultima-Build (GTRSimon). The front shifter (side/center) is complete, cab;es have been delivered and the rear mechanism has almost been completed. Updates will follow.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing. The Renegade Hybrid shifter doesn't have enough lateral movement to correctly reach all four gear planes. I get either reverse or 5th, but to get both it takes a good arm (which isn't good for the shifter and doesn't make nice shifts).

Can I get some info of the Porsche shifter you got? I'll probably get it from

A reasonable alternative might be:

http://www.cableshift.com/

The Cable-SHiFT product was originally developed by Brandwood Cars. I don't know if it's considered a better system tham the CMS side shifter offering. I do know that no modifications are required to the transaxle to install it (so restoration is no problem if required). Their kit also includes the cables and shifter for a fairly reasonable price.
