clutch fluid change

hi factory shut now and cant remembere if its dot 4 or 5 in the clutch..

I want to do and complete change anyway as fluid is black...

what the best for as hot race engine..

Tell us more about this black fluid.

It should not be black even if very old so something is wrong.

My first thought is that it does have DOT 5 in there and has eaten the seals. Ask Wayne about that.

just changed the fluid to dot sythetic as i have aeroquip lines... i was aware of dot 5 being different but as we use dot 5 in classic cars i was told it was fluid that did not eat paint so alot of the clasic guys like it?? eat seals?? i have heard that, please tel me more please wayne???

The GTW uses a hydraulic release bearing as part of the clutch actuating mechanism and in doing so eradicates the need for a slave cylinder. The part is a Saab that is also used by GM I think but in using AP DoT 5.1 racing brake fluid I had a problem where it was found to attack the rubber O ring used to seal between the sliding parts of the 'throw out bearing' ( that is the American term for the part ). AFTER this problem was identified I was informed of the recommended fluid and basically the lower the DoT number, the more pure and there for less harmful to the O ring the fluid is. I was using DoT 3 but SSS was the last man to work on the car and it now has DoT 4.

I use the same saab setup and (it may be pure coincidence) but I had the exact same issue, so i use dot4 for the clutch. I replaced the o rings twice - cost £5, but you need to take the whole car apart to get at them! (rear clip , drive shafts, gbox etc) I would suggest you change the fluid every year (as well as the brake fluid) as a matter of course.

doesnt seem to effect seals. It might be a bit of an overkill as its to cure brake fade but i had some about and as engine/box/clutch can get a bit hot i thought id try it(not 900 degrees hot i know)..

^^^ SRF is overkill for the brakes on your car Dom let alone the clutch actuating mechanism. I am not saying that it will cause you any problems but it is a little like using Super unleaded in your Fiat Panda - an unnecessary expense. Bear in mind that this type of fluid can get easily contaminated and it is advised that you change it at much more regular intervals

but it was on the shelf in the garage and i did not have any DOT 4.... So as i wanted to change it, sod it i used it... Better than sitting on the shelf doing nothing......like owning a GTR and not driving it...hahahahha
