Exhaust coating bulk buy
Discussion
OK peeps.
Several of us are considering camcoating our exhausts.
I'm looking to get mine done in the next few weeks so if anyone else is interested, then can you let me know so I can try to negotiate a bulk discount.
Please only reply to this if you are GENUINELY considering getting them done.
From my last enquiry to the supplier:
Usual coatings for GTR's have been internal smooth ceramic with exterior satin black or high polish Cermakrome finish. We have developed a new Race Spec sytem comprising the internal coating with 3 exterior layers of black ceramic to maximise thermal insulation and hence reduce under-bonnet temperatures.
Cost of treatment for the 2 exhaust manifolds is £230 + VAT.
To coat silencers with external 3 layers costs £42.50 + VAT each.
For external Cermakrome finish costs are £210 + VAT for the manifolds and £51 + VAT each silencer.
Coating intermediate pipe lengths in either finish around £10 + VAT per foot.
Lead time around 1 week. Return carriage is £15 + VAT by City Link.
To save you working it out, for headers AND silencers to be done internal smooth ceramic with cermakrome exteriors costs £327 +VAT

I like the idea of getting them done as my engine runs very hot but I do like the look of them in stainless (Although they are now full of grime after 6500 miles and I still haven’t cleaned them). I am sure that the benefits are dependant on the individual engine but are you able to roughly identify the benefits of the internal coating alone against that of both internal/external and no coating at all.
Do the silencers have to be repacked if done internally?
Call me thick but I'm glad you summed up the price because I didn't follow your breakdown too well so how much would it cost for internal only - I am interested if it will have a noticeable difference.

I will definitely go for it. Only problem is that I have to wait for the new Brodix cyl. heads (which should arrive end of December/beginning of Jan.) to match the exhaust manifold openings with the exhaust ports of the heads. So it will be around mid to end of January. Is there enough time to wait for me?

I would like to say yes but I do not have my car at the moment, its at the factory and I will get it back around 10th Jan. I would like to join in if you are willing to wait until then.
Thanks
Brian - what are they doing to it? If you want in, I'm sure Ted can whip yours off and send it direct to them (they're not far from Hinckley as it happens)

Primarily, internal coating reduces under bonnet temps and I guess, helps exhaust gas flow a bit.
External coating helps reduce temps even more and provides a finish that doesn't colour/tarnish (unlike stainless).
Silencers are external coating only, so don't need repacking.

Peter, I'd like to get them done before mid-Jan, but the company who doe them may not have time to do them all before this anyway.
Let me see if I can cut a deal first as you'll be sending them direct from CZ.

Please put me down for the internal coating of the manifolds only - unless that messes up your deal. I appreciate the stainless discolours - but they are nice colours and I think still look better than a black finish.
OK Chewy. However, the cermakrome finish polishes up to be chrome (stainless) but doesn't tarnish. Still want internal only?

I've had my exhausts done like this and they look nice...and keep looking nice. They are not as shiny as stainless when new but much brighter once the plain stainless has tarnished. I've been dithering with getting a decent digital camera so the best pic I have is: http://fiddes.net/ultima/first-engine-run.jpg
You can see how the tail pipes (uncoated) have started to turn dark golden in colour even with the engine only being run for an hour. It's much worse now. I have no great knowledge of how they reduce heat as I've not really met another Ultima with std exhausts to compare it with. CamCoat is a very good company to deal with IMHO; knowledgeable, helpful and they delivered when they said they would.
Sorry I'm late on parade, been to a funeral today.
Yes please, put me down for the cermachrome.
My research of these coatings indicated that the internal coating raises the exhaust gas temperature, which increases the gas speed, which improves scavenging. My understanding is that our engines performance is somewhat reduced by the unavoidably short exhaust system so the improved gas speed my result in some HP gains.

Stig, thank you a lot, this is ok for me. I will ship directly, but would like to get the same spec and same price (if possible).
Peter
OK - I concede.
Thanks chaps for the input.
My decision was initially based on an uninformed opinion of what it might look like when done, but I must admit davefiddes car looks pretty good and I suppose I could do with all the help I can get to keep those temperatures down.
The cermakrome looks like the way to go so could you please put me down for the Full Monty.

Sorry just got back from Leceister and I asn't at the factory. Canam being treated to a roof. Due to my own absence until between Christmas and New Year. Factory was a little unsure when I could collect rather hoping w/c 5 Jan. I would like to go for full monty manifolds exaust and tail pipes internal and Cermakrone. Do you think new manifold gaskets will be required or will they go back with originals.
What are your thoughts on timing.

All - I would imagine that replacing the exhaust manifold gaskets would be necessary. Even if they're in reasonable nick, it's just not worth refitting them as they're bound to blow in time.
Some other things that you might like to consider in your budgetting, are new silencer clamps (these have a habit of snapping when you try to remove them) and be extremely careful when removing the manifold bolts. They're not easy to get at at the best of times and you don't want to shear one off - DO YOU???
Am awaiting feedback from the supplier re. costs and timings and will advise as soon as I know.

If you have to replace the Mikalor exhaust clamps then it might be a good idea to get 79-85mm clamps as they are a better fit for the O/D of the exhaust pipe. I did this after I broke 2 or 3 clamps removing the exhaust the first time. I thought I'd been careful to avoid over tightening the bolts but the exposed bolt thread is too long on the smaller clamps and it bends a little causing them to bind when they are undone. The bigger clamps seem to do a better job at sealing the exhaust pipe as well.
Just on an amusing build note. I was over careful when fitting tail pipes for first time. Rolled the car into drive. Started engine went around the back to amire the exhausts and found one missing. After a few moments of total amazement I found it had dropped-off and rolled under the car. I even checked to see if I had launched it back into garage. Needless to say they have not dropped off since, the real test will be removing them now!.
