I have talked to Ted Marlow about a lightweight body for the GTR. He said, it's a difference of 45Kg or so from the standard body. Has anyone bought this lightweight body with their kit?
The standard body cost about 7k USD. How much is it for the lightweight version?
Does anyone think if it's possible to bring down the weight of the GTR by another 200 Kg? Let's say going with the lightweight body, using half a tank of fuel instead of full. Going with carbon fibre paneling instead of aluminum. Titanium exhaust instead of stainless steal. Magnesium wheels. And other little things like brakes in carbon fibre, and so forth to bring the weight down some more... Of course, going with an aluminum block for the chevy sbc engine, other lightweight titanium parts for the engine... Some guy on here talked about a sbc engine weighing about 150 Kg.
Anyone thought about going this route? Using different components from the standard factory parts to lighten their car.
Lastly, what kit stages should I go for? I am definitely going with stage 1 and the body (lightweight version, prefitted. What other stages should I go for to get to a rolling chassis? I'll be using my own brakes, and wheels...
Nothing wrong with a lighter car but at what cost for what gain.
If this is to be a pure track car then I could perhaps understand because reduced kilos could produce valuable tenths of seconds.
If its a road car then you will spend many many thousands of £ more for what would be a difficult to quantify gain.

I'll be using it mostly for street racing. But I would prefer a lighter car. If in the future, I feel the need to play on the track then it would be beneficial on both ends.
I could afford few things listed above. I would start with the lightweight body, wheels, panels, and few other things. The engine would come last though. Just wanted to know if anyone went with the lightweight body and other lightweight items for decreasing the weight of their GTR.

'Street racing' - what's that then? It's illegal in the UK.
In theory, you could shave off the weight. More if you like. But as Steve said, what's the point? It will cost you a great deal of money (much more than a 1275 mini) for negligable gain.
For the amount you'd spend lightening the car to get an improved power/weight ratio, you might as well build a standard car and spend the money on a higher power engine to make up the defecit.

Yep, It's illegal in Washington, DC too. But that's one of the fastest way to make few hundred dollars...

With the lighten car and higher power engine, it would give a higher power-to-weight ratio than a heavier car with a higher power engine... Since I am building it. I could take my time. Certain components that could save weight can be bought at a later time.

Hopefully, I will beable to buy it around mid-to-late summer of 2004. I need to find a full-time job before investing my life savings into the GTR.

Actually, the first 10 stages doesn't whole lot. It cost about 15k or so... I need additional wheels, brakes, suspension and springs. I already have some wheels, brakes, and springs in mind. They be saving few Kg as well.
