No ignition when side lights not on????
Discussion
This is a strange one!
Had a major short circuit and parts of the wiring loom had to be replaced.
Had this done professionally and sorted a load of other wiring issues at the same time.
Problem I have now is the ignition will only come on (and turn off) with the side lights. Even more strange, I am sure i did not have this problem when i picked up the car.
Looking at the wiring diagram, there does not appear to be any way this could occur?
Everything works fine apart from this problem.
The only mod. that was made to the loom was to put in a kill switch which cuts everything off apart from the alarm circuit.
The guy who did the wiring for me is now on holiday and I would really like to know what's gone wrong here - is it a short somewhere?
Anybody have a suggestions please?
Thanks,
Martin.

martin, sounds like the ignition live has been wired up throgh the side light switch..
are you using escort stalks or switch on dash for lights??
now please confirm....you have no ignition lights when you turn the key?? or no starter when you push the button??
can you start car on the key rather than button?
dom

Either it's not wired as per the diagram, or you have a wiring fault. For example melted insulation could produce a short in the middle of a loom, even if you replace the original wire that caused the problem the damage will remain. Is it possible that you have a wiring fault causing the ignition to be fed by the intended supply *and* by the sidelight circuit, and the intended supply has now failed/blown a fuse?
Hi Guys,
thanks for taking the trouble to reply.
Dom - the ignition will not come on with just the key and the starter does not work either. i have to turn the side lights on to activate the ignition and turn them off to deactivate the ignition.
The side lights are turned on via a switch (separate from the headlights or main beam).
Clive - the kill switch is just 2 large bolt version.
cheers,
Martin

Hi Dom,
I now live near Crewe.
I will try to trace the wires and identify which is the live ignition feed and where it goes.
Thing that really concerns me is that i am sure when i picked up the car this problem was not there - unfortunately I am not very good with electrics so may have to wait for the electrician to get back from his hols.
Cheers,
Martin.
