Before taking the Ultima into consideration...

So I've been looking for another car that's capable of being an all-around awesome car. In my opinion, the Ultima GTR does everything I need it to. There are a few barriers:

1.) The legality of the Ultima in the state of California (U.S.A.)
2.) Renting space to work on the Ultima
3.) Need of tools/dolly, etc.

Well I think I've heard of Locosts being street legal in the state of California, so I believe the Ultimas can accomplish the same task. I'm not sure on this, so I would like someone to bring up some clarification on this topic...

Ah yes, space. Where I live, space is limited and expensive. I found a 15'x10' rental space and I'm not even sure if it's accessible 24/7. Is 15'x10' sufficient for storing everything?

I have basic tools, but what other tools are needed? I've been reading about a dolly from various threads, but is it absolutely necessary?

If I were to get a full option Ultima GTR, that would cost $25k. Including tax and shipping, I believe it would total to about $28k. With 1 1/2 to 2 year space rental, that would add up to around $30k. Is this a realistic budget, or would I possibly run into other problems that will exceed my planned budget?

I would have made that more like 85K USD

15x10 will be very tight in the UK where we can get and build the chassis first then get the body later. In the US you will have all of the kit in one hit so that space will not be enough. I expect the packing case it arrives in will be larger.

In that space the dolly would be essential so that you can move the chassis against the wall to give working space on the other side.

your 28k equates to 17,000 GBP If only they were that cheap, the roads would be a better looking place.

Yes and No.

I assume you are looking at the USA section of the Factory web site.
You obviously made the mistake of stopping at Stage17 with a list price total of $27955.

Read on down and add to your list the other things you may consider essential like....
Engine
gearbox
wheels
tires
seats
instruments
electrics
fuels system.

To name but a few.

Don't blame the factory for trying to stitch you up it is simply that the second part of the list is the point at which individuals will start to go their own way with specific engine, 'box, brake and wheel combinations so it is difficult to include them in the prime build stages.
Even if you do want to do your own thing the list is still a good guide for your final cost.

I know of a number of builds taking place in the US, (CJulian, San Diego GTR, RowdyRenault, drdrdrt) some of those in CA and the guys frequent this site so should be able to offer advice on registration/legality.

What part of California are you in? There are Ultima owners all over the state. Hard to guess by my user id, but I'm in San Diego (there are 3 in SD), I know one in Orange County, 1 in LA County.

These guys above are absolutely right. $28k will be a good start toward getting a "Top End" Engine/Trans combo done.

Other than the budget errors though this is a great car and you'll find plenty of opportunities in California to get a lot of help with the project. I've just passed 3000 miles on mine and its a blast (literally) every time I drive it.

You'll need to go through the SB100 process to get it street legal in CA.

Wow, what a huge miscalculation on my part. That's what I get for browsing the internet all morning.

I'll calculate the total later, but how much did it cost in total for you guys? (space rental, shipping+tax, tools, etc.)

First getting an Ultima legal in California is a piece of cake SB100a little leg work and you are in. a good build with an LS7 is going to be 90k at a minimum. As far as shop space goes the guys in England do it in single space garages with parts stored in their house. They have my respect for thier commitment to the job. If at all possible plan on a space about 20 feet by 20 feet and even thats going to be a pain in the tail. Lee
