Body re paint advice

Guys,

At present my new bodywork is in gel coat red. Looks lovely but well theres something missing.
So im in discussions with sss re body mods new front clip etc, and my attention has been turned to the paint.

I love the Ferrari Red - Rosso Corsa i believe.

Now can any of you paint experts tell me, is the quality of finish in the paint or the clear coat?
How many coats of each are required.
Does it have to be Ferrari Paint or can it be from another supplier.

Any input would be appreciated.

The vehicle in the pictures looses its desirability in the 'after' shot IMHO.

Can't answer with authority on where the paint finish comes from but believe there will only be one coat of clear so the base has to be good. For solid colours I don't believe they use a clear coat.

I don't think Ferrari make paint.
Your paint shop will have their favoured paint supplier and the colour will be mixed on site unless it is a small business.

That second car has tons of silicone based polish on it, however your body mould has no wax on it whatsoever at the minute Mark. If you saw the factory presented bodies at Stoneleigh, they all had great gloss finish and high lustre..... I would think as a result of several coats of high grade wax polish.
Each coat of high grade silicone wax tends to deepen the colour slightly as does each coat of clear lacquer during a paint process.
Modern water based paints even solid colours, are clearcoated (lacquered) usually with 1&1/2 to 2 coats of clear, this gives them their gloss appearance and seals them from the elements.

I had read somewhere that several coats of clear are often added to high end aftermarket paint jobs, this makes sense from your comments.

Having just painted my Ultima and being the lackie for a mate who is a very good painter.... be ready for a long painful job... my body was about 18 months old and hadn't been left out in the sun or anything, but the moulds do suffer from pin holes in the gelcoat (something you cannot see with the naked eye, until you paint it... so lots and lots of prep are required to get it right.

My car took 9 coats for primers, colour and lacquer to get the finish as desired.

plus there is about 20 hours of flat and polishing required after that....

Very big job, the red gel finish can be polished up to look great (look at the factory demo!) only really worth the pain of painting if you want a unique colour.

wouldn't worry about the change of colour because in a couple of years it will be a nice shade of red with flip tone black swirles, and I believe the colour is Ford radient red / sunburst.
