Anyone fitted any kind of bumpers to their Ultima? Especially for the rear? If you ever get hit from behind, the first thing that takes the impact is the gearbox. The fiberglass canopy isn't going to do anything to help save the important parts of the car. That's probably not a good thing. Any thoughts on this?

If that happens then the insurance company will replace the 'box along with anything else that is damaged.

In order for a bumper to do what you want it would need to be very strong and heavy along with some very strong chassis structure all round the back all of which would take some doing.

I wasn't talking about adding bumpers that would protect the car in the event of a 60 miles per hour impact. or 30 miles per hour. More like the 5 MPH rule we have here, that states a car must be able to sustain a 5 MPH hit from any angle without damage to important systems. Meaning after a 5 MPH hit, you can drive the car home, or to the shop, without any issues.

a brown Ultima? I think that would be grounds for a lawsuit by the factory. smile

5mph that will not do much harm to the ultima, if you are in bad luck you will need a new radiator.

What about from the rear? hit those exhaust at 5 MPH and it may rip the headers off the engine? or push the gearbox selector shaft way deeper than it should go?

The bumpers aren't essential to pass inspection (I think). I was just wondering what people's thought were on the subject.

If you build a "Home Built Vehicle" in Canada then you don't need them, and that's the only way you'll ever get a Ultima on the road here....
PS I live in Calgary....
