Repaint

Ok guys, for those of you who have had your cars completely repainted, from dropping the car off at the painters, how long has it taken to get it back and were all the grilles and headlight covers etc removed for painting ???

Firstly, are you going for a colour change? If so it's a much bigger job as you have the main bulkheads of the cabin to sort out. When we painted mine we had the engine out to paint the rear bulkhead and you have to remove everything from it. Secondly, has the car been painted before or is it a gel finish? If gel then you will have fun sorting the pinholes in the gel that are always present on the clams.

As for how much to remove, grills etc, the more you do the better the finished product, but the longer it will take. My car took two of us about 200 hours to paint with all the rubbing down and finishing work but I now have a mirror finish on the (cheers Mark for showing the skill with the gun!) car.

Oh and just to give you an idea, the paint for the car (base coat, colour, lacquer etc) was over £700 at trade rates, let alone the materials and booth time...

Thanks speed yellow, its not a colour change but it is to go on the gell coat as it hasn't been painted before, I am having to do it because of the black swirles in the red gell, 200 hours I wish !! its been in the paint shop for three months now have missed 9 shows and events getting a bit p155ed off.

Ouch.... yeah that is a long time.... are they doing it as a job on the side??? Mine was twice as long to do as a normal car, but still was in and out of the paintshop in two weeks with two of us working..

If anyone is looking at getting their car painted can I recommend Option 1 http://www.option1sportscars.co.uk/ they painted my Elise, it was a full colour change and they did an amazing job. Prices was great considering they did quite a bit of repair work to the clam shells. The finish is like a mirror, almost too good to drive :-)

Thanks RS Man, had I known 3 1/2 months ago and know what I know now, I wouldn't have hesitated, I called in on Sat and its now in primer at last maybe some progress.

Ruus things come to those who wait..... maybe not as long as you have but it hopefully will be worth it..........

R u taking it to Goodwood in primer then???? or taking the bling machine...
