Retrofit of F.A.S.T. EFI

Have purchased an EZ-EFI system from FAST. System comes complete including fuel pump and throttle body with injectors to fit straight on Holley mannifold, wiring loom, Lambda & ECU. What is cool (if it works that is) is that this system is self learning. ie once you have input some basic parameters it runs in closed loop and teaches itself the correct fuelings. It only controls fueling and keeps the std dizzy. The system has won awards in the USA and is capable of fueling 600hp in std form. Bigger pumps and injectors are available.
A question for those of you with EFI systems. Is it necessary to mount the ECU in the cockpit to avoid high temps or can it be safely mounted in the engine compartement? Have any of you experienced ECU failure due to high temps? Mounting in the cockpit would require quite a big hole to be made in the bulkhead in order to thread all the loom bits through.
I would love to discuss this with anybody who has done a retrofit so if you are so inclined PM me.

If you did retrofit of EFI where did you mount swirl pots fuel pumps etc?
I have split tank system and will keep original fuel pumps feeding swirl pot with HP pump sucking from swirl pot to feed fuel rail.
Am using changover valve to return fuel to correct tanks.

All that extra fuel system will need to mount either on the engine bulkhead or some have fitted an ali plate as a floor to the front of the engine bay. All the new pump and filter etc can then mount on the plate keeping it low down. I am fitting Megasquirt EFI to mine and the above is how I'm doing my fuel.
Still searching for somewhere I like for the ECU but the side pod is looking the most likely.

Have recently seen a good FAST installation, the fuel system on the engine bulkhead and the ECU etc fitted on the opposite (cockpit) side, inside a smart ally housing behind the seats.
The hardest part of the FAST kit in an Ultima was trying to find a long and smooth enough section of road to carry out light throttle/cruise/fine-tune live mapping...... the laptop cursor seems to bounce around everywhere except the exact spot needed.....quite a bit of co-ordination required between the driver and laptop operator, great fun though and a very easy system to tweak...even for a numpty like myself!

This is a throttle body fuel injection system and will continue to have the distributions problems associated with a carb.
If you are after a plug and play (and no tuning) the best bet would be a sequential injection system like the mass flo system.
the fast system does run on sequential fire but its limited by the dizzy finding a cam and crank signal, but i think 738's ideas are spot on a big cam needs careful fueling, im sure 738 will explain it better than i can.If you are after a plug and play (and no tuning) the best bet would be a sequential injection system like the mass flo system.

yep mount the ecu away from heat sources, you need to be aware the mapping is easy but not as easy as you are implying.

Dom......have you not considered an IDF inlet manifold with BMW ITB's and aftermarket ECU.......would probably sort the fuelling of your cammy motor!

Been to see a guy about Motec ecu but he can not do injection/manifold etc etc
Im not sure what i need to convert from carb/ msd to fuel injection...I have been given software to modify the motec ecu and mapping and fully understand how to map and set it up, but not sure of complete costs and parts required???

A number of the usual companies can sell you a replacement inlet manifold specifically for EFI. You can stay with the MSD but it would be better to convert to EDIS or coil on plug.
It will all cost a fair bit and be quite a lot of work. It is taking me hours to sort all the wiring so that it is neat and out of the way. So far I'm looking at an additional 4 relays and seven fuses so am building a new fuse and relay panel.
By the end my car will have at least 16 relays and 21 fuses.
If the wideband o2 sensor I have fitted is to be believed then my fuels is massively out so the money spent will be worthwhile or that's what I keep telling myself.

I think if you are going down this avenue with your current engine you need to go for the throttle bodies, otherwise i think you will have issuse with the cars town/low speed manners!!

ie your engine plus the extra revenue to convert to SBC efi does that get you anywhere near a secondhand LS and i possibly think it does?? then if so imo there is only one way to go?
the single throttle body is an improvement over a carb but is it enough to justify the expense....... not imo. If you are running a gentle cam then yes its a good move if you want more than 420bhp out of a sbc you need to go with the bits Steve and Dave are suggesting.

My system does not require any mapping at all. Just basic info like engine size no of cyls and firing order. you can adjust target AFR but only at a few points. The guys at FAST say it works well as long as you don't want the nth degree of tune which I don't.
I will let you guys know how it works when I finally get it going.
